Barcelona extended their lead at the top of La Liga with a convincing 3-0 win over Alaves on Sunday, thanks to a first-half hat-trick from Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker’s 26-minute treble took his tally to 10 goals in just nine league games this season, solidifying his position as La Liga’s top scorer.
Barcelona’s dominant performance at the Mendizorroza Stadium saw them move three points clear of rivals Real Madrid, who had drawn level at the top after beating Villarreal the previous day. The victory, their eighth in nine La Liga matches, continued a strong start to the season under new coach Hansi Flick.
Lewandowski praised his teammates for providing him with excellent service. “I get a lot of good passes, and that makes it easier for me to score goals,” the 36-year-old striker said after the match. “We played well from the first minute, and with three goals in the first half, we were able to control the second half comfortably.”
Barcelona took charge of the game from the start, with winger Raphinha and Lewandowski at the heart of their attacking play. Raphinha had an early goal disallowed for offside, but soon after delivered a precise free-kick for Lewandowski to head in the opener.
The Brazilian winger then provided the assist for Barcelona’s second goal, bursting down the left wing and crossing for Lewandowski to tap in from close range. Alaves goalkeeper Antonio Sivera managed to deny further efforts from both Raphinha and Lewandowski, but the Polish striker completed his hat-trick before halftime. Eric Garcia, who had replaced the injured Ferran Torres early on, found Lewandowski with a clever pass, and the veteran striker finished clinically past Sivera.
Alaves had chances to score, with Toni Martinez heading home a goal that was later ruled offside in the first half. Martinez came close again in the second half when his header hit the post after a corner slipped through Barcelona’s backup goalkeeper Inaki Pena, who was standing in for the injured Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Despite Alaves’ efforts, including another disallowed goal from Santiago Mourino due to offside, Barcelona’s high defensive line and disciplined play kept their clean sheet intact. The victory further solidified Barcelona’s position as title favorites in La Liga, with Lewandowski proving to be the key player in their push for silverware.
