Former Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon has revealed that up to 15,000 Israeli soldiers have been killed or wounded in the ongoing war on Gaza since October 7, 2023. His remarks, published in Yedioth Ahronoth, highlight the severe toll the conflict has taken on the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the challenges the military faces.
Call for Mandatory Ultra-Orthodox Conscription
Ya’alon emphasized the urgent need to address manpower shortages in the IDF, proposing that Israel end military exemptions for ultra-Orthodox Jews. Currently, thousands of ultra-Orthodox men are exempt from conscription due to religious study, a policy that has long been debated in Israel. He urged the government to pass legislation that would make military service mandatory for all, ensuring that the IDF has sufficient personnel to continue operations.
Israel’s Struggles in Ceasefire Talks
Ya’alon also addressed Israel’s handling of ceasefire and hostage negotiations in Qatar, where the United States has increased its involvement. According to him, this intervention was necessary due to Israel’s failure to meet its commitments in the negotiation process.
He accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of deliberately stalling the talks, replacing Israel’s professional negotiating team with a more politically loyal group. This, he suggested, has prolonged the conflict and weakened Israel’s position in diplomatic efforts.
Leadership Struggles and Military Setbacks
Commenting on the recent appointment of General Eyal Zamir as the new IDF Chief of Staff, Ya’alon dismissed the government’s expectations that new military leadership would lead to victory in Gaza. He argued that Netanyahu and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich have unfairly blamed the IDF’s failures on the outgoing Chief of Staff, while ignoring the role of political leadership in shaping military strategy.
According to Ya’alon, winning a war is not solely the responsibility of the Chief of Staff, but rather a result of the government’s strategic decisions. His statements reflect growing divisions within Israel’s political and military leadership regarding the prolonged and costly conflict in Gaza.
Rising Casualties and Political Fallout
Ya’alon’s revelations come amid rising casualties and mounting domestic criticism of Netanyahu’s handling of the war. The conflict, which has dragged on for months, has not only led to significant military losses but has also deepened political tensions within Israel.
As the situation in Gaza remains volatile, questions continue to be raised about Israel’s long-term strategy, the effectiveness of its military operations, and the political motivations driving the government’s decisions.
