Archer Aviation Inc. announced on Friday a collaboration agreement with prominent UAE and Abu Dhabi entities to establish electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air taxi operations in Abu Dhabi. The partnership sets the stage for the region’s first commercial eVTOL flights, slated for the first quarter of 2026.
The agreement, signed under the auspices of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council (SASC) and witnessed by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Special Affairs, aims to formalize the cooperation between various stakeholders. Archer Aviation will become the first manufacturer of eVTOL vehicles in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, with plans to establish full-scale local production capabilities.
Key participants in the agreement include the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), Abu Dhabi Airports (AD Airports), Falcon Aviation Services, Etihad Aviation Training, Etihad Airways, the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Global Air Navigation Services (GANS), and the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility). This partnership outlines the roles and responsibilities of each entity and lays the groundwork for definitive operational agreements.
Badr Al-Olama, Director General of ADIO, hailed the collaboration as a significant milestone: “We are pleased to see Abu Dhabi’s aviation sector aligning with Archer to support air taxi operations. This partnership reinforces the emirate’s leadership in advanced mobility solutions and its position as a global innovator in smart and autonomous vehicles.”
The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has been actively working with Archer to establish the regulatory framework required for the certification of its Midnight aircraft and the approval of commercial air taxi services. In November 2024, the GCAA organized a week-long workshop at Archer’s headquarters to expedite these efforts.
Etihad Airways CEO Antonoaldo Neves highlighted the project’s potential impact on premium travel experiences: “Abu Dhabi continues to pioneer safe aviation innovation. We are excited to work with Archer to commercialize electric air taxis that could soon serve our premium passengers traveling to and from Abu Dhabi International Airport.”
Archer Aviation’s Chief Commercial Officer, Nikhil Goel, emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership: “The UAE is a cornerstone of Archer’s future. With comprehensive support from our partners and Abu Dhabi’s visionary approach to next-gen transportation, we are poised to make Midnight a reality.”
The collaboration represents a robust alignment between global and regional aviation leaders, further solidifying Abu Dhabi’s commitment to smart mobility and its status as a leader in autonomous transportation solutions.
