Five years ago, on January 10 and 11, 2020, relentless rains wreaked havoc across the UAE, leaving residents grappling with widespread flooding, travel disruptions, and tragic losses. The heavy downpour, described by officials as “unusually heavy,” caused chaos in several emirates, including Dubai, Sharjah, and Ras Al Khaimah.
The torrential rains claimed two lives. In Ras Al Khaimah’s Al Fahleem area, a domestic worker died when a house wall collapsed due to the rain, while an Asian worker was swept away by flash floods in the Wadi Sha’am area. Authorities in Ras Al Khaimah evacuated 120 families from flooded homes, highlighting the severity of the weather’s impact.
Dubai International Airport (DXB), one of the world’s busiest airports, faced significant disruptions on January 10. Heavy rains caused flight delays, cancellations, and diversions, leaving many passengers stranded. Several residents missed their flights due to flooded roads and traffic snarls. “It was the craziest storm in the last 10 years,” tweeted Huss, a Dubai resident, summing up the extraordinary weather event.
Floodwaters turned roads and valleys in Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and Umm Al Quwain into impassable waterways. Major routes in Dubai and Sharjah were also submerged, prompting authorities to divert traffic to prevent further chaos. Schools across the UAE remained closed over the weekend due to damage from the rain, and numerous cars were abandoned on waterlogged streets.
Amid the turmoil, residents and authorities displayed remarkable resilience and unity. Strangers stepped up to help stranded motorists, turning a challenging situation into one of collective compassion. Dubai resident Anjali Menon recounted her ordeal near Al Quoz, where her car broke down in floodwaters. “Luckily, I got help from two gentlemen and managed to reverse my car and go home,” she said.
Another resident shared a similar experience near Ibn Battuta Mall, where a passerby came to their aid after their vehicle became stuck.
Authorities worked tirelessly to restore normalcy, reopening key roads and assisting affected families. Volunteers joined forces with emergency services, exemplifying the community’s strength during adversity.
The 2020 rains were a stark reminder of nature’s unpredictability but also a testament to the UAE’s ability to come together in times of crisis. Despite the challenges, the spirit of unity and mutual support shone brightly, leaving a lasting impression on those who experienced the storm.
