Dubai’s education sector is experiencing an unprecedented surge in admissions, with Term 2 enrolments increasing by up to 40% compared to the previous year. This spike, attributed to the relocation of professional families and the UAE’s emergence as a global hub for quality education, has also resulted in growing waiting lists across many schools.
Rising Demand for World-Class Education
Glen Radojkovich, Director of Education at Taaleem, highlighted the trend, stating: “Our schools have seen a substantial rise in enrolments for the upcoming semester, reflecting the rapid growth of Dubai and Abu Dhabi as global education hubs. For Term 2, we are seeing a 40% increase in enrolments compared to last year.”
He noted that while International Baccalaureate (IB) schools are absorbing more new students, the UK curriculum schools are largely at capacity, leaving limited seats available. Furthermore, applications for the next academic year are already showing a 22% increase, signaling sustained demand.
Commitment to Quality
Despite the growing pressure, school leaders emphasized their commitment to maintaining optimal class sizes to ensure academic excellence.
Simon Herbert, Head of School and CEO at GEMS International School – Al Khail, said: “We always maintain healthy class sizes. It is important to have parental trust, knowing that these sizes will not increase after their child joins school.”
Herbert advised parents to initiate the admission process early, given the high demand for quality education. He also encouraged thorough research and visits to schools to ensure alignment with family aspirations.
Navigating the Admissions Process
Headteachers underscored the importance of considering key factors such as geographical location, curriculum offerings, school values, and facilities. Parents are encouraged to attend open houses, school tours, and webinars to interact with staff and gather deeper insights into their options.
Herbert added: “If families are already in the UAE, visiting schools after researching online and consulting friends is crucial. Webinars, like those on the International Baccalaureate, can also provide clarity and answer specific questions.”
Outlook for Dubai’s Education Sector
Dubai’s growing reputation as a hub for world-class education, combined with a steady influx of expatriates, continues to drive demand. With waiting lists expanding and applications for the next academic year already climbing, the need for early planning and informed decisions is more critical than ever for parents seeking the best educational opportunities for their children.
