Dubai Police have issued fines to more than 12,000 vehicle owners since January 2024 for unauthorized car modifications and excessive noise violations, officials announced on Friday.
The violations, which involve making unapproved changes to vehicle engines or chassis, have raised concerns about noise pollution and public safety. A total of 5,523 fines were handed to drivers of vehicles causing excessive noise, while 6,496 penalties targeted those who made illegal modifications to their car engines.
Under Dubai traffic laws, operating a noisy vehicle is a serious offense punishable by a fine of AED 2,000 and 12 black points on the driver’s record. Additionally, violators face impoundment fees of up to AED 10,000 to retrieve their vehicles.
Advanced Technology Tracks Violators
Authorities highlighted the role of advanced technology, including smart cameras, in detecting noise violations across the emirate. A video released by Dubai Police showcases how these cameras monitor and identify vehicles that exceed acceptable noise levels.
Maj. Gen. Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, emphasized the risks posed by illegal modifications. “Equipping vehicles with technologies that boost engine speed can create noise disturbances and pose safety risks, especially in residential areas,” he said.
He also criticized reckless drivers who endanger public safety. “The law penalizes those who operate vehicles in ways that jeopardize their own lives or the lives of others,” Maj. Gen. Al Mazrouei added.
Reporting Dangerous Behavior
To combat such violations, Dubai Police urged residents to report unsafe driving behaviors and noise disturbances through their “Police Eye” or “We Are All Police” services available on the Dubai Police smart app. Reports can also be filed by calling 901.
Stricter Measures to Maintain Public Safety
Noise pollution caused by modified vehicles has been a growing concern in Dubai. Authorities have consistently reminded the public of the legal requirements surrounding vehicle modifications, emphasizing the importance of obtaining permits for any changes to engines or chassis.
Dubai Police continue to enforce strict penalties to deter unsafe and disruptive driving practices. Maj. Gen. Al Mazrouei reiterated that causing noise or disturbances while driving is an offense that can result in administrative impoundment, further underscoring the city’s commitment to maintaining public safety and tranquility.
By leveraging advanced surveillance technology and public reporting mechanisms, Dubai Police aim to ensure safer roads and a more peaceful environment for residents.
