The Dubai Metro will commence operations earlier than usual, starting at 5:00 a.m. instead of the regular 8:00 a.m., on Sunday, January 12. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced the change on Thursday to accommodate participants and spectators of the 24th Dubai Marathon.
The marathon, one of the city’s most anticipated sporting events, will see thousands of runners take to the streets at 6:00 a.m. for a 42-kilometer challenge. Organized under the aegis of the Dubai Sports Council, the event will begin and end on Umm Suqeim Road, opposite the Madinat Jumeirah.
Participants can choose from three races: a 4-kilometer fun run, a 10-kilometer race, and the full 42-kilometer marathon. The event is expected to draw large crowds, both local and international, showcasing Dubai’s vibrant sports culture.
Adding to the excitement, former World Marathon Champion Lelisa Desisa is set to compete in the elite field. The 34-year-old Ethiopian athlete, known for his remarkable performances, returns to the scene of his 2013 triumph, where he clocked a personal best of 2:04:45 to win the Dubai Marathon.
The Dubai Marathon, established in 1998, is among the premier road-running events in the region. Its flat, fast course has made it a favorite for elite athletes aiming to set personal records and achieve world-class times.
The RTA’s decision to extend metro service hours reflects the city’s commitment to ensuring smooth transportation for participants and supporters. With thousands expected to attend, early metro services will provide a convenient and efficient way to navigate the city and reach the marathon venue.
Organizers and authorities have urged residents to plan their travel accordingly, as road closures and diversions are anticipated along the marathon route. Spectators are encouraged to use public transport to minimize congestion and support the seamless execution of the event.
The marathon is not only a testament to athletic endurance but also a celebration of community spirit, drawing people from diverse backgrounds to participate, cheer, and unite over the shared goal of fitness and achievement.
With world-class athletes, enthusiastic runners, and dedicated supporters, the 24th Dubai Marathon promises to be a memorable event that underscores Dubai’s status as a global hub for sports and lifestyle events.
