Indian regional airline Air Kerala, spearheaded by two Dubai-based businessmen, has taken significant steps towards commencing operations. The airline has formalized agreements with airports in Kannur, Kerala, and Mysuru, Karnataka, marking a milestone in its bid to enhance regional connectivity.
Progress Towards Domestic Operations
“This is a huge step for us as Air Kerala, and we are on track to begin domestic operations by June this year,” said Afi Ahmed, the airline’s chairman, speaking from India. He emphasized the importance of collaborations with Kannur and Mysuru in advancing regional connectivity and supporting tourism initiatives.
On Friday, Air Kerala officials met with the Airports Authority of India-Mysuru and local representatives, including Member of Parliament Yaduveer Wadiyar. The discussions resulted in a series of agreements, including the establishment of an aviation academy in Mysuru and joint efforts to promote regional tourism.
Plans for International Operations
Ahmed confirmed that international flights are slated to begin by the last quarter of 2026, with Kochi designated as the airline’s primary hub. The recent clearance from India’s Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has brought Air Kerala closer to obtaining an Air Operator Certificate (AOC), issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
“This clearance takes us one step closer to commencing commercial operations,” added Ayub Kallada, the airline’s vice chairman.
Affordable and Reliable Service
Hareesh Kutty, CEO of Air Kerala, highlighted the airline’s commitment to affordability and punctuality. “We will offer tickets at very affordable prices and prioritize timely operations to ensure passengers reach their destinations without delays,” he stated.
Air Kerala’s parent company, Zettfly Aviation, received a no-objection certificate (NOC) from India’s civil aviation ministry last year. At the time, Kallada outlined the airline’s mission to connect Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities with major metro airports, improving accessibility and convenience for travelers across regions.
Focus on Recruitment
To prepare for its launch, Air Kerala is actively hiring experienced aviation professionals. “We are focusing on recruiting experts from the UAE and GCC, prioritizing those with experience in commercial and operational roles,” said Ahmed, adding that the airline is also seeking pilots.
The leadership team has already been bolstered by industry veterans, including CEO Hareesh Kutty, CFO Kirti Rao, and seasoned aviation leaders Captain CS Randhawa and Captain Ashutosh Vashishth.
As Air Kerala gears up for its maiden flight, the airline is set to bring affordable and efficient travel options to India’s regional and metro airports, with a long-term vision of international expansion.
