Abu Dhabi to Enforce New Restrictions on Heavy Vehicles Starting January 27

Abu Dhabi to Enforce New Restrictions on Heavy Vehicles Starting January 27

Abu Dhabi Mobility announced on Monday that new restrictions on heavy vehicle movement will take effect on January 27 as part of efforts to enhance traffic flow and safety across the city. The measures aim to address congestion and protect infrastructure as vehicle volumes continue to rise in the capital.

The updated rules will prohibit heavy vehicles, including freight trucks, tankers, and construction equipment, from operating on city roads during peak traffic hours. From Monday to Thursday, the restrictions will apply from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and again from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. On Fridays, the morning ban remains the same, with an additional restriction from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

According to Abu Dhabi Mobility, the initiative seeks to mitigate congestion caused by the slower movement of heavy vehicles during high-traffic periods. The restrictions are also intended to safeguard infrastructure, such as roads and bridges, from excessive wear and tear caused by heavy loads.

Authorities have emphasized that compliance will be monitored closely in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Police, ensuring that all heavy vehicle operators adhere to the new regulations.

Regional Coordination on Traffic Measures

Abu Dhabi’s move is part of a broader regional effort to manage heavy vehicle traffic during peak hours. Similar measures are being implemented in neighboring emirates, including Dubai and Sharjah.

In Dubai, a ban on trucks using Emirates Road during evening rush hours from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. took effect on January 1. The restriction applies to the stretch between Al Awir Street and Sharjah, as part of the Roads and Transport Authority’s (RTA) plans to enhance traffic management on key routes.

Sharjah has also introduced comparable regulations. Since January 1, trucks have been prohibited from using the Emirates Transit Road during evening peak hours from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., specifically between the Sharjah entrance and Intersection No. 7.

These coordinated measures across the UAE aim to ensure smoother travel experiences for commuters and reduce delays caused by the interaction of heavy and light vehicles during busy hours.

Officials from Abu Dhabi Mobility have urged heavy vehicle operators to adjust their schedules to comply with the restrictions and support the initiative’s goals of improving road safety and efficiency. Additional information and guidelines regarding the restrictions are available on the agency’s website.
