A group of 10 athletes from Abu Dhabi completed the grueling Walk1000 expedition, trekking 1,000 kilometers across the desert in just 30 days. The journey, which began in Al Sila, passed through the Liwa desert, Al Ain, and concluded in Al Wathba on December 2, was part of a community initiative to inspire an active lifestyle.
Organized by Active Abu Dhabi, Pure Health, and the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, Walk1000 encouraged participants and onlookers to embrace walking as a sustainable fitness activity. Despite facing extreme physical and psychological challenges, the team proved that determination and teamwork could triumph over adversity.
Adventures in the Wild
The expedition was filled with memorable encounters with desert wildlife. Khalifa Al Mazrouei, a UAE explorer and founder of National Geographic Arabic, captured rare moments such as observing the Arabian Oryx and the elusive sand cat. Al Mazrouei also showcased creatures like the black scorpion and the horned viper, emphasizing their defensive nature and the importance of respecting wildlife.
“The highlight was inspiring so many inactive people to join us. Many have continued walking and being active even after the event,” Al Mazrouei shared.
Pushing Limits
Participants walked up to 45 kilometers daily, crossing challenging sand dunes and enduring the scorching sun. Veteran marathoner Daniel Tesfaye described it as the toughest challenge he had ever faced, noting that even nature presented significant obstacles.
“At one point, we had to change our route due to strong winds that made visibility impossible. The mental readiness required for this challenge was immense,” Tesfaye said.
Despite these hardships, the camaraderie among participants kept morale high. “We became close friends, entertained each other, and stayed motivated,” Tesfaye added.
Cultural and Social Highlights
The journey also brought moments of cultural exchange and support. The team interacted with locals, who offered them coffee and dates during their trek. One notable day was when Sheikh Zayed bin Mohammed bin Zayed joined the group for 45 kilometers, providing encouragement and inspiration.
Tarek Ahmad, another participant, cherished experiences such as hunting with a falcon and witnessing a camel beauty contest. Despite suffering an ankle injury on the first day, Ahmad persevered, attributing his resilience to the team’s support.
Building Strength and Endurance
The Walk1000 challenge not only tested physical and mental limits but also enhanced participants’ fitness. Four athletes completed the Abu Dhabi Marathon just five days after the expedition. Tesfaye, for instance, achieved a personal best time of 3:59 for the 42.1km race, surpassing his previous record.
“This experience taught me patience, resilience, and the incredible adaptability of the human body,” Ahmad concluded.
The Walk1000 expedition showcased the power of determination, community, and the enduring human spirit, leaving participants and supporters inspired to lead healthier, more active lives.
