India Orders Airlines to Strengthen Passenger Services Amid Flight Route Changes

India Orders Airlines to Strengthen Passenger Services Amid Flight Route Changes

India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered all airlines operating international flights to immediately implement enhanced measures to ensure passenger comfort and safety, following recent airspace closures and overflight restrictions across the South Asian region.

According to a report from WAM, the DGCA directive comes in response to widespread changes in flight routes due to restricted airspace, resulting in longer flight times and an increased likelihood of technical stopovers. The aviation authority emphasized that these measures are crucial to maintaining service standards during what could be prolonged and more complicated journeys.

“Several flight routes have been significantly altered, leading to extended flight durations and the possibility of technical stops,” the DGCA said in a statement.

The new regulations require airlines to clearly and proactively inform passengers about any changes to flight routes, longer travel times, and the need for technical stops. This information must be provided at check-in counters, boarding gates, and through digital communication channels, ensuring passengers are fully aware of any adjustments to their travel plans.

In addition to communication requirements, airlines must revise their inflight catering plans to match the actual extended flight durations. This includes ensuring sufficient food, water, and the availability of special meals throughout the entire journey, including any unplanned stops.

Airlines have also been instructed to double-check that medical supplies onboard are adequate for the extended travel times. Furthermore, they must ensure that emergency services are readily available at airports designated for potential technical halts.

The DGCA has directed airline call centers and customer service teams to be fully equipped to handle issues such as delays, missed connections, and the provision of assistance or compensation in line with civil aviation regulations.

“All airlines must treat this directive as mandatory,” the DGCA stressed. “Failure to comply may result in regulatory action under the applicable Civil Aviation Requirements. This directive is effective immediately and will remain in force until further notice.”

The enhanced measures are seen as critical as airlines and passengers adapt to the operational challenges posed by ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting South Asian airspace.
