Is learning to drive as an adult harder? Not necessarily.
For many, driving is a skill they take for granted because it’s something they learned how to do as a teenager. As you spend more time on the road, you’ll get more and more comfortable, until it’s just second nature.
This just isn’t the case when you’re an adult learning to drive. It can be stressful and scary, especially if it’s something you’ve been putting off for a long time. At the end of the day, driving is something you should only do if you’re confident.
In this post, we’re going to make learning how to drive as an adult easy. Keep reading and we’ll give you a few key tips to make getting behind the wheel a breeze – emotionally, mentally, and physically.
Get a Learner’s Permit
The first thing you need to do, before anything else, is to really decide that you want to start driving. For those that waited to learn, there’s usually a reason why and it usually has to do with fear and anxiety in a car.Â
Getting your learner’s permit is a great first step to getting behind the wheel. It gives you the option of learning with someone but if you have a change of heart, that’s okay too. Don’t forget to study before you go in, but it’s a fairly straightforward test that shouldn’t pose any problems.
Practice With Someone
The best way to learn to drive is to…drive. Once you’ve got a learner’s permit, you need to start driving with someone. It can be your spouse, a friend, or a family member – they just need to be someone with a full license of their own.
It should be someone that you’re really comfortable with and you should always start out in parking lots, which are always the best places to learn to drive. Have them show you basic maneuvers and just keep repeating them until you feel confident enough to take it onto the road.
Pay Close Attention
When you do end up on the road, make sure to take it slow. Pay very close attention to everything that’s going on around you – other drivers, street signs, lights, cyclists, and pedestrians. The more alert you are, the better at driving you’ll be – this is always true.
Go out as many times as possible before the road test for your license. Driving gets easier the longer you do it.
Study, Study, Study
The other thing you should be doing at this time is studying for your driver’s test. Depending on where you live, there could be a written component in addition to a driving component. You may be able to find resources online, for example, this K53 Learners Test that prepares residents of South Africa for their K53 driving test. Also explore truck driver’s license if you are interested.Â
Taking Tests and Learning to Drive
Learning to drive as an adult can feel intimidating, but it’s no different than learning as a young person. If anything, you’re more responsible and more courteous when you’re an adult, so that should almost always translate into being a better driver. Conquer the anxiety and get your permit today.
