WhatsApp, the messaging platform with more than three billion users across 180 countries, has announced two major features aimed at making global communication smoother and more personal: real-time message translations and a new writing assistance tool.
The translation feature, revealed in a recent company blog post, allows users to instantly translate messages within chats, groups, and Channels. By long-pressing on a message and selecting “Translate,” users can choose their preferred language settings, which can be saved for future use.
For Android users, the service comes with an added convenience: the option to enable automatic translation for entire conversations. Once activated, all incoming messages in that chat will be translated automatically, eliminating the need for repeated manual translations. The feature is initially launching with six languages on Android—English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic—while iPhone users will have access to translations in more than 19 languages from the outset.
WhatsApp has emphasized that user privacy remains central to this development. All translations are carried out directly on users’ devices, ensuring that message content does not pass through WhatsApp’s servers. The company reiterated that end-to-end encryption remains intact, stating, “We hope this feature helps break down language barriers and allows users to connect more deeply with loved ones and communities around the globe.”
Just weeks after this launch, WhatsApp introduced another tool: Private Writing Help. Rolled out on August 27, this feature is designed to support users in refining the tone of their messages—whether they want to sound professional, lighthearted, or empathetic. By tapping a new pencil icon while drafting a message, users can access tailored writing suggestions before sending.
To protect confidentiality, WhatsApp confirmed that all suggestions are generated on the user’s own device. Neither WhatsApp nor its parent company has access to the content or revised versions, thanks to a secure local processing system. The architecture has been independently reviewed by security firms NCC Group and Trail of Bits, which confirmed its effectiveness in safeguarding user data.
Private Writing Help is currently available in English for users in the United States and selected countries, with expansion into additional languages and regions planned later this year. The feature is optional and disabled by default, allowing users to decide whether or not to use it.
These back-to-back launches highlight WhatsApp’s broader strategy of enhancing communication while protecting privacy. By enabling seamless translations and offering new ways to fine-tune personal expression, the company is reinforcing its role as the world’s most widely used messaging platform—helping billions stay connected across cultures and communities in a secure, user-first environment.
