WhatsApp has unveiled a series of new features designed to make group calls more organised, interactive, and reliable, marking one of the platform’s most significant updates to its calling experience.
The popular messaging service, which has become a mainstay for both personal and professional communication, announced that users can now schedule calls directly within the app. The new option appears under the Calls tab, where users can tap the “+” button and select “Schedule call.” From there, participants can be invited seamlessly, and all scheduled calls will appear in the Calls tab with an attendee list and a shareable link.
These links can be added to calendars or shared outside WhatsApp, ensuring flexibility for participants. To avoid missed appointments, the app will also send a notification reminder to invitees shortly before the call begins.
Interactive Tools for Smoother Communication
To improve etiquette during large group conversations, WhatsApp has introduced a “raise hand” feature. This allows users to signal when they would like to speak, helping to reduce interruptions and keep discussions orderly.
In addition, real-time emoji reactions are now available during group calls, enabling participants to engage without breaking the flow of conversation.
Another update gives call link creators greater control by notifying them whenever someone joins via the shared link. This ensures better oversight and awareness during scheduled or large sessions.
Enhanced Call Quality and Usability
The latest improvements build on updates introduced earlier this year, including the addition of a dedicated Calls tab, which provides a central hub to initiate calls, manage history, and access call links in one place.
For iPhone users, the company has also rolled out a pinch-to-zoom function during video calls, allowing for closer views of individual speakers or details on screen. Users can now add someone to an ongoing one-on-one call directly from the chat window by tapping the call icon and selecting “Add to call,” streamlining the process of expanding conversations.
Perhaps most importantly, WhatsApp has further optimised its call quality. With smarter bandwidth detection and a more efficient routing system, the app can upgrade video streams to HD faster, helping reduce freezes and dropped calls. These improvements come as video calling continues to be a central part of the app’s appeal, especially for families, friends, and remote teams.
A Step Forward in Group Communication
With its latest updates, WhatsApp is positioning itself as a stronger competitor in the video conferencing space, where features such as scheduling, hand raising, and reactions have become standard. The company’s emphasis on reliability and user experience suggests it is aiming to bridge the gap between casual social calls and professional virtual meetings.
By combining improved scheduling tools, interactive features, and technical upgrades, WhatsApp’s new group calling experience seeks to make digital communication more seamless for its two billion users worldwide.
