Meta-owned WhatsApp has announced two major updates designed to enhance accessibility and security for its global users. The company has launched a dedicated app for Apple Watch and introduced a new passkey-based system for encrypting chat backups, marking a significant step toward improving convenience and data protection.
The new Apple Watch app, described by WhatsApp as a “big upgrade for your wrist,” allows users to stay connected and manage conversations directly from their smartwatch. For the first time, Apple Watch users can read and reply to complete messages without needing their iPhone. The app also supports viewing high-quality images and stickers, reacting to messages with emojis, and sending or recording voice messages straight from the watch.
In addition, users can now receive WhatsApp call notifications, see who is calling, and access more of their chat history on the small screen. WhatsApp stated that all messages and calls remain fully protected by end-to-end encryption, ensuring that privacy is not compromised.
The new app is available for Apple Watch Series 4 or newer models running watchOS 10 or later. The company said the release marks only the beginning of its expansion onto wearable devices, with more features planned for future updates to enhance functionality and user experience.
Alongside the wearable app launch, WhatsApp has introduced passkey-encrypted backups, a new security measure that simplifies how users protect their messages and media. Previously, users had to manage complex passwords or long encryption keys to secure their chat backups. With the new system, backups can be encrypted using biometric authentication methods such as fingerprints, facial recognition, or device passcodes.
This update makes protecting chat history faster and easier while maintaining WhatsApp’s signature end-to-end encryption for all communications. The feature aims to ensure that users can safely restore or transfer their data between devices without compromising security.
According to WhatsApp, the passkey encryption update will be rolled out gradually over the coming weeks. To enable it, users can go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup > End-to-end Encrypted Backup.
By introducing an Apple Watch app and simplifying encryption, WhatsApp continues to position itself as a leader in secure and accessible messaging. These updates are part of the company’s ongoing effort to enhance usability while safeguarding personal communication across devices.
The dual rollout highlights WhatsApp’s focus on adapting to user needs — combining convenience through wearable technology with stronger security features that make data protection easier for everyone.
