WhatsApp has recently introduced a series of major updates focused on improving user experience, communication flexibility, and privacy protection across its platform.
The most prominent development is the official release of WhatsApp for iPad, a long-awaited addition that expands the app’s multi-device capabilities. With this update, iPad users can now join video and audio calls with up to 32 participants, share their screen, and switch seamlessly between front and rear cameras. The app has been fully optimised for iPadOS, supporting multitasking features such as Stage Manager, Split View, and Slide Over. These enhancements allow users to chat while browsing or collaborating on projects, offering a more fluid experience.
In addition, the iPad version supports Apple accessories including the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil, increasing its appeal for both casual users and professionals seeking greater productivity. According to WhatsApp, the new iPad app is backed by its multi-device technology, which keeps all messages, media, and calls synchronised across devices like iPhone and Mac, without compromising end-to-end encryption.
Another key update is the expansion of voice chat in group conversations. Previously limited to large groups, the feature is now available across all group chats. Users can initiate a voice chat by swiping up from the bottom of the group screen and holding for a few seconds. Unlike traditional calls, voice chats do not ring members directly. Instead, the session appears as a banner at the bottom of the group chat, allowing participants to join or leave as they choose.
These voice chats maintain WhatsApp’s standard of end-to-end encryption, ensuring all communication remains private and secure.
Further strengthening user privacy, WhatsApp rolled out a new feature in April 2025 called Advanced Chat Privacy. This setting is available in both individual and group chats and is designed to prevent content from being shared outside the app. When activated, users can block chat exports, stop automatic media downloads, and restrict how messages are used in AI-related functions.
Together, these updates represent WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to provide more flexible communication options and reinforce its commitment to privacy in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
