In a move aimed at expanding its accessibility and user flexibility, WhatsApp is working on a new feature called “guest chats” that will allow people to communicate on the platform without needing to register or install the app. The feature, which is still under development, is expected to roll out in a future update, according to WaBetaInfo, a site that tracks WhatsApp’s upcoming features.
The feature marks a significant shift in WhatsApp’s long-standing model, allowing users to invite non-WhatsApp users into one-on-one conversations through a secure link. Once available, users will be able to generate a unique link and share it via SMS, email, or other messaging platforms. Recipients can then join a private chat directly from their web browser without needing to download the app or create an account.
Unlike third-party chat integrations, guest chats will be entirely hosted within WhatsApp’s own infrastructure, preserving its signature interface and encryption standards. Conversations initiated through this feature will remain end-to-end encrypted — ensuring that only the sender and recipient can read the messages, with no visibility for WhatsApp or any third parties.
Despite its potential to broaden communication options, the guest chat feature will come with a number of limitations. Guest users will only be able to send and receive text messages. Media sharing — including photos, videos, audio messages, and files — will not be supported. Additionally, voice and video calling, as well as group chat functionality, will be unavailable in the initial version.
The feature is intended for one-on-one conversations and is likely aimed at quick or temporary communication, such as for customer service, event coordination, or emergency contact. It could also act as a low-friction way to introduce non-users to WhatsApp’s ecosystem, potentially converting them into full users over time.
Technical details such as chat expiration timelines, security verification, and identity controls have yet to be disclosed. However, the company has reassured that even browser-based guest interactions will operate within WhatsApp’s secure and private environment.
With this update, WhatsApp appears to be responding to growing user demand for more flexible and inclusive communication options — while still maintaining its strict commitment to privacy and encryption. An official announcement with more detailed information is expected in the coming months.
