Uber Technologies and autonomous driving company WeRide have announced a major expansion of their strategic partnership to deploy self-driving vehicles in 15 new cities over the next five years, in what is being described as one of the largest collaborations in the autonomous mobility sector to date.
The ambitious rollout will focus on cities outside the United States and China, spanning multiple continents, including locations in Europe and the Middle East. It builds on successful pilot programs in Abu Dhabi and a soon-to-launch initiative in Dubai.
As part of the expanded agreement, WeRide will provide its proprietary Robotaxi technology, while Uber will be responsible for managing fleet operations and integrating the autonomous services into its global ride-hailing platform. Passengers in the selected cities will be able to access the autonomous ride services directly through the Uber app.
“We are excited to take our partnership with Uber to new heights,” said Tony Han, founder and CEO of WeRide. “This expansion aligns with WeRide’s ambitious strategy for global growth — to make autonomous driving solutions more affordable and accessible to people worldwide.”
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi called the deal a “significant milestone” in the ongoing effort to bring autonomous vehicles to a broader global audience. “Our collaboration with WeRide combines their cutting-edge self-driving technology with our scale and operational expertise,” he said. “Together, we are accelerating the shift to autonomous mobility in cities around the world.”
The move signals growing momentum in the global push for autonomous transportation, as companies look beyond their home markets for growth opportunities and regulatory support. Both Uber and WeRide have emphasized the importance of international expansion to advance adoption of autonomous vehicle technology, especially in urban environments where demand for mobility solutions continues to surge.
WeRide, a leading China-based autonomous vehicle company with operations in several countries, has been at the forefront of developing and deploying Level 4 autonomous driving systems. Its technology has been tested across various environments and weather conditions, bolstering confidence in its scalability.
For Uber, the partnership offers a renewed commitment to autonomous technology after it previously sold its own self-driving division. The collaboration with WeRide allows Uber to integrate autonomous vehicles into its platform without developing the technology in-house.
The companies did not specify which cities would be included in the rollout, but confirmed that they will announce specific locations in the coming months.
