Samsung Electronics on Wednesday announced the launch of the Galaxy XR, a next-generation extended reality (XR) headset developed in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm Technologies. The new device represents Samsung’s entry into a fresh product category built on the Android XR platform — the first Android system designed specifically for immersive, AI-powered experiences.
The Galaxy XR aims to merge artificial intelligence with virtual and augmented reality, introducing what Samsung describes as a “new ecosystem of mobile devices.” Won-Joon Choi, Chief Operating Officer of Samsung’s Mobile eXperience Business, said the launch marks a significant step forward for the company. “With Galaxy XR, Samsung is introducing a brand-new ecosystem of mobile devices. Built on Android XR, it expands the vision for mobile AI into a new frontier of immersive and meaningful possibilities,” he said.
Developed jointly by Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm, the Android XR platform forms the foundation for Samsung’s broader extended reality roadmap, which will eventually include AI-powered smart glasses. “Android XR is the first Android platform built entirely for the Gemini era,” said Sameer Samat, President of Android Ecosystem at Google. “Together with Samsung, we’re building an open, unified platform for the next evolution of computing.”
The Galaxy XR is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform and features the Qualcomm Hexagon NPU to support advanced AI operations. The headset integrates Gemini AI at the system level, enabling users to interact naturally through voice, vision, and gestures. It can interpret surroundings through built-in sensors and cameras, offering real-time responses and contextual assistance.
With dual 4K Micro-OLED displays and up to 2.5 hours of battery life, the Galaxy XR is designed for immersive visual experiences. It includes iris recognition for security, six microphones with beamforming, and multiple tracking sensors for precise head, hand, and eye movement.
Weighing just 545 grams, the headset emphasizes ergonomic comfort with a balanced frame and a detachable battery pack. Users can enjoy applications such as Google Maps, YouTube, and Google Photos in XR, and access features like “Circle to Search,” which allows object identification with a simple midair gesture.
Beyond entertainment, Samsung is extending XR capabilities into enterprise use. In partnership with Samsung Heavy Industries and Qualcomm, the Galaxy XR will support virtual shipbuilding, safety training, and productivity tools.
Samsung also revealed plans to collaborate with eyewear brands like Warby Parker and Gentle Monster on future AI-driven smart glasses.
The Galaxy XR will be available starting October 21 in the United States and October 22 in South Korea, signaling Samsung’s ambitious step into the future of spatial and AI-integrated computing.
