OpenAI’s widely used ChatGPT tool and its related services experienced a wave of global disruptions on Tuesday, with users across various platforms reporting performance issues ranging from slow responses to full outages.
Reports of the disruption began surfacing early in the day on social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit, where users described problems accessing ChatGPT through both the web and mobile apps. According to outage-tracking site Downdetector, complaints about ChatGPT began increasing steadily on Tuesday morning across multiple regions.
OpenAI confirmed the issue on its official status page, noting that some users were encountering “elevated error rates and latency” affecting ChatGPT, its new text-to-video platform Sora, and OpenAI APIs. By Tuesday afternoon, the company updated the status of ChatGPT to a “partial outage” and indicated continued elevated error rates specifically for Sora.
While some users reported complete failure to load the chatbot, others faced delays or intermittent errors, including the recurring “Error in message stream” message on both desktop and mobile versions of the app — even for those using paid subscriptions.
Despite the disruptions, the outages appear to be affecting users unevenly. Some reported no problems at all, suggesting the issue may be limited to specific regions or user groups.
OpenAI has yet to confirm the root cause of the outage or provide a clear timeline for resolution, saying only that their teams are “continuing to investigate the issue.”
The latest service interruption follows previous outages in recent months. In late 2024, ChatGPT went offline briefly after OpenAI expanded GPT-4o access to free-tier users. Another outage occurred in December following ChatGPT’s integration into Apple’s Intelligence suite.
OpenAI’s status logs show that ChatGPT services were marked as “degraded” as early as Monday, though the problem was initially resolved within an hour. However, the recurrence of issues by Tuesday indicates broader technical challenges may be at play.
As of now, the company has not provided additional updates on when full service will be restored. Users are advised to monitor OpenAI’s official status page for real-time updates on system performance.
