Nvidia NVDA.O is reportedly in advanced discussions to acquire Israel-based AI startup AI21 Labs for a price estimated between $2 billion and $3 billion, according to the Calcalist financial daily on Tuesday.
Nvidia declined to comment on the report, and AI21 Labs was not immediately available for comment.
AI21 Labs, founded in 2017 by Amnon Shashua and two others, has been a notable player in the artificial intelligence sector. Shashua also serves as founder and CEO of Mobileye, a developer of self-driving car technologies. The startup has benefited from a surge of interest in AI, attracting significant venture capital investment, including participation from Nvidia and Alphabet’s Google in a 2023 funding round that valued AI21 at $1.4 billion.
Calcalist reported that AI21 has been for sale for some time and that negotiations with Nvidia have intensified in recent weeks. The report highlighted that Nvidia’s main interest appears to be AI21’s workforce of around 200 employees, many of whom hold advanced academic degrees and have specialized expertise in artificial intelligence development.
The potential acquisition comes as Nvidia seeks to expand its presence in Israel. The company plans to build a new research and development campus in Kiryat Tivon, near Haifa, which could accommodate up to 10,000 employees. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has described Israel as the company’s “second home,” reflecting the strategic importance of the country for the firm’s technological and AI ambitions.
The planned Israeli campus will span approximately 160,000 square meters (1.7 million square feet) across 90 dunams (22 acres) and will include office buildings, parks, and common areas. The design is inspired by Nvidia’s headquarters in Santa Clara, California. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with initial occupancy targeted for 2031.
Analysts say the acquisition of AI21 Labs would strengthen Nvidia’s AI capabilities at a time when the company is seeking to consolidate its position as a global leader in artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. AI21’s expertise in natural language processing and advanced AI models aligns with Nvidia’s ongoing investments in AI research and development.
The deal, if finalized, would represent one of Nvidia’s largest acquisitions in recent years and signal continued consolidation in the AI startup space. It also reflects the broader trend of major tech firms acquiring specialized AI talent to accelerate innovation and maintain competitive advantages.
With the AI market rapidly evolving and talent in high demand, Nvidia’s potential acquisition of AI21 Labs underscores the company’s commitment to strengthening its capabilities in both Israel and globally, positioning it to remain at the forefront of artificial intelligence research and commercial application.
