Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced plans to invest up to $65 billion in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in 2025, aiming to secure the company’s position as a leader in the rapidly evolving AI sector.

In a Facebook post, Zuckerberg declared 2025 “a defining year for AI,” emphasizing that Meta’s initiatives in this space will drive innovation and shape the company’s future. The significant investment underscores Meta’s commitment to competing with industry giants like OpenAI and Google.

“This is a massive effort,” Zuckerberg stated, noting that the expansion will bolster Meta’s core products and support U.S. technological leadership.

Major Investments in AI Infrastructure

As part of its ambitious roadmap, Meta will construct a massive 2-gigawatt data center, large enough to cover a substantial portion of Manhattan, to meet the computational demands of its AI projects. The company plans to bring online approximately 1 gigawatt of computing power in 2025 and end the year with over 1.3 million graphics processing units (GPUs).

Meta has been a significant buyer of GPUs from Nvidia, whose chips are essential for running advanced AI models. These resources will support the development of Meta’s next-generation AI technologies, including Llama 4, which Zuckerberg predicts will become a leading state-of-the-art model.

Additionally, Meta will ramp up hiring for AI roles as part of its broader investment strategy. The company expects its AI systems to serve over a billion users globally by the end of 2025.

Competitive Landscape

Meta’s announcement comes amid heightened competition in the AI space. Just days earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled “Stargate,” a $500 billion joint AI infrastructure venture between OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle.

The race to dominate AI has seen major tech companies pour significant resources into the sector, particularly following the success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Zuckerberg’s announcement positions Meta as a key player in this ongoing competition.

Vision for the Future

Zuckerberg also shared Meta’s long-term vision, including plans to develop an AI engineer capable of contributing significant code to its research and development efforts. “We have the capital to continue investing in the years ahead,” he wrote, underscoring the company’s financial commitment to AI.

The announcement had a ripple effect across the tech industry, further solidifying AI as the focal point for innovation and investment. Zuckerberg concluded his post with a rallying call: “Let’s go build.”

Meta’s significant financial commitment highlights its intent to drive AI innovation and maintain its relevance in the face of growing competition. As the sector continues to gain traction, 2025 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for artificial intelligence.
