Masdar City has launched on-the-ground trials of Level 4 autonomous vehicles (AVs), marking a key milestone in the UAE’s push toward smart, sustainable transportation. The trials are being conducted in partnership with Solutions+, a Mubadala-owned smart mobility provider, and are overseen by Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre (ITC).
The project includes the registration, testing, and operational validation of the highly automated vehicles, in full compliance with safety and regulatory standards. The initiative aligns with Abu Dhabi’s ambition to position itself as a global leader in next-generation transport.
Level 4 autonomy allows vehicles to operate without driver input within a geofenced area. Masdar City, a hub for clean tech and innovation, is serving as a real-world testbed for this technology. International AV manufacturers are invited to trial their solutions in the city’s urban environment, which combines cutting-edge infrastructure with sustainable design.
“This milestone reflects Masdar City’s continued leadership in smart mobility,” said Ahmed Baghoum, CEO of Masdar City. “Our work in autonomous vehicle development aligns with our broader vision of building the cities of the future through innovation and environmental responsibility.”
Dr Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director-General of the ITC, called the move a “critical step forward” in the emirate’s mobility strategy. “We’re fostering innovation through a flexible, forward-thinking regulatory approach, creating a model of sustainable transport that enhances Abu Dhabi’s global standing.”
The pilot phase covers a 2.4-kilometre loop connecting key destinations across Masdar City, including Siemens Middle East, My City Centre Masdar, Central Park, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and The Link. During the initial testing period, trained safety officers will be present onboard, but future operations will be managed remotely via a centralized control hub.
Ali Alyafei, Chief Operations Officer at Solutions+, emphasized the significance of testing in a real-world environment. “This collaboration enables us to fine-tune AV performance in response to the UAE’s unique infrastructure and climate, while supporting the nation’s Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative,” he said.
The initiative builds on Masdar City’s legacy of AV innovation, which began in 2010 with the introduction of first-generation autonomous vehicles. Today, the city is home to the Smart and Autonomous Vehicles Industry (SAVI) cluster and continues to serve as a proving ground for sustainable urban technologies.
The success of the trials could lead to the wider deployment of autonomous vehicles across Abu Dhabi, positioning the capital at the forefront of global smart mobility transformation.
