Emirates has announced a Dhs85 million investment to install more than 200 biometric-enabled cameras across Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport (DXB), marking a major step toward a fully contactless travel experience. The new system will allow passengers to move seamlessly through check-in, immigration, boarding gates, and lounges using only facial recognition, eliminating the need for passports or boarding passes at multiple checkpoints.
Developed in collaboration with the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigner Affairs Dubai (GDRFAD), the initiative forms part of Emirates’ broader vision to deliver a high-tech, frictionless airport journey. “With our latest Biometrics Path development, Emirates has invested in innovations to enhance the customer travel experience, providing remarkable speed, efficiency, and accuracy at Terminal 3,” said Adel Al Redha, Emirates’ Deputy President and COO. “Since 2017, we have been working closely with GDRFAD to upgrade our systems and implement the latest technologies to ensure our customers enjoy a world-class, seamless journey.”
The advanced cameras can recognize a traveler’s biometric profile from a distance of one meter, allowing passengers to pass through checkpoints continuously without stopping. Emirates says this will significantly cut waiting times and improve airport flow, benefiting both residents and international visitors.
Travelers can register for the biometric system through the Emirates app, self-service kiosks, or check-in counters. Once enrolled, they can use facial recognition to access Smart Gates, Emirates lounges, and biometric boarding gates. The rollout covers Concourses A, B, and C, with plans to expand further in the coming months.
Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of GDRFAD Dubai, said the partnership highlights Dubai’s dedication to innovation in everyday travel. “At GDRFAD Dubai, innovation has long been part of our DNA,” he said. “Together with Emirates, we are shaping a seamless travel experience that reflects the UAE’s commitment to efficiency, hospitality, and digital governance.”
The biometric system operates through integration with GDRFAD’s national identity database. For new visitors, Emirates creates a temporary digital profile that is upgraded to a permanent record after entering Dubai, allowing for faster processing on future trips.
Emirates emphasized that strong data protection protocols are central to the initiative. The airline said it maintains strict security measures to safeguard biometric and personal information, while GDRFAD ensures compliance through its digital governance framework.
Industry analysts say Emirates’ move reflects a broader global trend toward AI-powered, paperless air travel. For Dubai—home to one of the world’s busiest international airports—the project represents a key milestone in its journey toward becoming a global leader in smart travel and digital transformation.
As Al Redha summed up, “The future of travel through Dubai International is swift, secure, and seamless.”
