Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced significant progress in rolling out its Automated Railway Infrastructure Inspection System (ARIIS), a state-of-the-art robotic solution designed to transform metro maintenance and safety standards.
The innovative platform, currently deployed on selected metro lines, enables round-the-clock monitoring of tracks and infrastructure with greater accuracy and speed than conventional methods. According to RTA, the system aligns with Dubai’s broader vision of building smart, sustainable, and globally competitive infrastructure.
Advanced Technology at Work
ARIIS is equipped with high-resolution 3D cameras, laser scanners, and precision sensors that conduct detailed inspections of the metro network. Operating mainly during overnight maintenance hours, the system ensures there is no disruption to passenger services.
As it navigates along the tracks, ARIIS gathers extensive data on wear and tear, cracks, and structural changes. The information is processed into actionable insights that help engineers predict potential issues before they escalate, allowing for timely repairs and more efficient planning. By shifting from reactive to predictive maintenance, the system has been credited with extending infrastructure lifespan and reducing emergency repairs.
Efficiency Gains and Cost Savings
Since its introduction, ARIIS has cut inspection times by 75 percent, saving an estimated 1,700 work hours. Manual inspection tasks have been reduced by 70 percent, while the accuracy and speed of condition assessments have improved by 40 percent.
The platform has also streamlined maintenance operations by optimising resource allocation by 40 percent. These improvements are expected to reduce maintenance costs by up to 25 percent, while at the same time enhancing safety and reliability for metro commuters.
“The adoption of ARIIS is a major step toward smarter and more sustainable public transport services in Dubai,” the RTA said in its update. “It allows us to make better use of resources while ensuring the highest standards of safety for passengers and operational staff.”
Future Expansion Plans
Following successful technical evaluations, the RTA plans to expand ARIIS across the entire Dubai Metro network. Officials are also considering extending similar inspection systems to other modes of public transport, including the Dubai Tram, subject to infrastructure compatibility.
All inspections conducted through ARIIS are coordinated under strict occupational safety standards to ensure smooth integration with metro operations.
The RTA emphasised that the project underscores Dubai’s continued investment in pioneering infrastructure technologies that reduce costs, improve efficiency, and support the city’s ambition to remain a global leader in transport innovation.
