The first edition of WHX Tech, a new global platform for digital health innovation, opened Monday at the Dubai World Trade Centre, bringing together more than 200 speakers, 300 exhibitors, and an expected 5,000 international healthcare leaders. The three-day event, running until September 10, underscores the UAE’s ambition to position itself as a hub for health technology and innovation.
The event was inaugurated by Dr. Alawi AlSheikh-Ali, director general of the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), who said the gathering reflects the rapid evolution of digital health technologies and their growing role in improving patient outcomes. “The solutions being presented over the next three days will enhance healthcare services and improve patient outcomes,” he said, noting the alignment with the vision of Dubai’s leadership to make the emirate a global center for health innovation.
A key moment of the opening day came from Dr. Amin Al Ameeri, assistant undersecretary of the Health Regulations Sector at the Ministry of Health and Prevention. Speaking to a packed audience, he posed the question: “Will humans or AI dictate the direction of future healthcare?” His answer — “the human being is the one to lead AI” — highlighted Dubai’s emphasis on ensuring technology remains human-centered.
Regulatory progress also featured prominently. Dr. Fatima Al Kaabi, director general of the Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE), highlighted the UAE’s recent achievements in pharmaceuticals. She noted that 23 innovative medicines have already been approved in 2025, thanks to fast-track approval systems, and emphasized the country’s growing role as a regional hub for advanced pharmaceutical production.
Global perspectives added further depth to the discussion. Harold “Hal” Wolf, president and CEO of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), addressed the challenges of chronic disease and aging populations, pointing to AI and digital tools as vital in prevention and management. Meanwhile, Shyam Bishen of the World Economic Forum described the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region as the fastest-growing digital health market worldwide, citing strong government backing and investment in AI and data infrastructure.
Peter Hall, president for IMEA at Informa Markets, the event’s organizer, said Dubai was the natural choice to host the launch. “There is no better place to host this event than Dubai. It is a city that embodies innovation, ambition, and progress,” he said, adding that WHX Tech aims to foster collaboration to tackle global healthcare challenges.
With a focus on thought leadership, regulation, and the future of health technologies, WHX Tech has quickly established itself as a landmark event for the sector. Sessions will continue through September 10, with discussions expected to shape policy, innovation, and partnerships in digital health.
