Apple is preparing for one of its most anticipated product announcements in years, with the iPhone 17 series expected to be unveiled in early September. According to industry leaks and reports, the upcoming lineup could bring the most significant design, display, and camera upgrades seen in recent models, sparking excitement and speculation among fans and analysts alike.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has indicated that Apple may hold its launch event on either September 9 or 10, in keeping with the company’s tradition of unveiling new iPhones in the second week of September, shortly after the US Labour Day holiday.
Slimmer Design and New Camera Layout
Among the most notable expected changes is a redesigned rear camera system. Certain models, including the iPhone 17 Air and Pro variants, are rumoured to adopt a horizontal camera arrangement, moving away from the vertical layout used in recent generations.
The iPhone 17 Air is tipped to be around 2mm slimmer than the current iPhone 16 Pro, offering a lighter, more comfortable feel while maintaining flagship performance. This shift is seen as part of Apple’s ongoing effort to balance aesthetics with functionality.
Display Upgrade Across the Lineup
For the first time, all iPhone 17 models are expected to feature a 120Hz refresh rate, a major leap for non-Pro versions, which currently operate at 60Hz. This enhancement would deliver smoother scrolling and animations, potentially addressing criticism directed at last year’s iPhone 16 and 16 Plus.
Reports also suggest that the Pro and Pro Max models will incorporate scratch-resistant and anti-reflective displays, while the baseline iPhone 17 and Air may not receive these premium upgrades. Always-on display functionality could also debut on non-Pro models.
Potential Price Increase After Five Years
Analysts anticipate that Apple may raise prices for the first time since 2019. Jefferies analyst Edison Lee predicts a $50 increase for the Air, Pro, and Pro Max models, citing higher component costs and tariffs. This would place the starting prices at approximately $979 for the iPhone 17 Air, $1,049 for the iPhone 17 Pro, and $1,249 for the iPhone 17 Pro Max, while the baseline iPhone 17 may retain its $829 price tag.
New Camera Controls in Development
A leak tied to the iPhone 17 Pro suggests a possible new camera control mechanism — a capacitive touch scroll surface — positioned alongside the main camera button. This feature could allow smoother adjustments to zoom and other settings, addressing long-standing user feedback about swipe-based controls.
While Apple has yet to confirm any details, the combination of design refinements, display improvements, and advanced camera features has heightened expectations for next month’s reveal. With the official keynote just weeks away, the iPhone 17 launch could mark a pivotal moment in the evolution of Apple’s flagship smartphone.
