Caroline Weir scored deep into stoppage time to rescue Real Madrid from defeat as they drew 1-1 with Paris FC in the Women’s Champions League on Tuesday night. The Scottish midfielder struck in the eighth minute of added time — two minutes beyond the official stoppage period — to deny the French side a repeat of their victory in Madrid last year.
Paris FC had taken the lead late in the first half when Lorena Azzaro converted a penalty after Filippa Angeldahl was judged to have fouled substitute Sheika Scott in the box. The visitors, who famously beat Madrid home and away in 2023, looked on course for another upset until Weir’s late intervention salvaged a point for the Spanish club.
Madrid controlled much of the first half, with Colombian winger Linda Caicedo rattling the crossbar after weaving past several defenders. Naomie Feller also tested Paris goalkeeper Mylène Chavas, who stood firm under heavy pressure. Despite Madrid’s dominance, Paris seized their chance from the spot in the 41st minute and defended resolutely for much of the match.
As the second half unfolded, Madrid’s frustration grew. Caicedo was again denied by Chavas, and goalkeeper Misa Rodríguez was booked for protesting a refereeing decision. But in the final moments, Weir finally broke through, squeezing a shot past Chavas to level the score.
“The performance was decent enough. We just couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net,” Weir told ESPN after the match.
In France, Lyon made a strong statement of intent with a 3-1 win over fellow European powerhouse Wolfsburg. Norwegian striker Ada Hegerberg scored twice within five minutes in the first half, while captain Wendie Renard added a penalty to seal Lyon’s dominance. Lineth Beerensteyn pulled one back for Wolfsburg, but it was not enough to halt Lyon’s momentum.
The result marked Lyon’s seventh consecutive win over Wolfsburg and their 11th meeting in the competition. Renard became the first player in UEFA club history to reach 100 victories, while Hegerberg extended her record as the Champions League’s all-time leading scorer with 69 goals.
Elsewhere, Chelsea cruised to a commanding 6-0 victory against debutants St. Pölten in Austria. Catarina Macario and Sam Kerr each netted twice, while Wieke Kaptein and an own goal from Lisa Ebert completed the rout.
In Rome, Norwegian side Vålerenga claimed their first-ever Champions League win by defeating Roma 1-0. Stine Brekken, 20, scored the decisive goal in the 40th minute, firing into the top corner after a solo run.
“We’ve been fighting so long to get better and get points in this competition,” Brekken said. “To finally get that win feels incredible for the team.”
