Brazilian forward Vinicius Jr and Spanish midfielder Aitana Bonmati were crowned FIFA men’s and women’s players of the year, respectively, at a ceremony held yesterday at the Aspire Academy in Doha.
Vinicius Jr Shines for Real Madrid
Vinicius, 24, secured the prestigious award after an outstanding season with Real Madrid. The forward scored 24 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions, playing a crucial role in Real Madrid’s La Liga and Champions League triumphs. His stellar campaign included a goal in Real’s Champions League final victory over Borussia Dortmund.
Vinicius edged out Spain and Manchester City’s Rodri and England’s Jude Bellingham, his Real Madrid teammate, to win the honor. The Brazilian, who narrowly missed the Ballon d’Or to Rodri in October, accepted the award in Doha as Real Madrid prepared for the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final against Mexico’s Pachuca.
“It seemed impossible when I played barefoot in the streets of Sao Goncalo, and now I’m here,” an emotional Vinicius said during his acceptance speech.
Bonmati’s Unstoppable Form
Aitana Bonmati, 26, claimed the FIFA women’s player of the year award for the second consecutive year. The Barcelona midfielder also secured the women’s Ballon d’Or in October, capping a year in which she helped her club achieve a domestic treble and retain the Champions League title.
Bonmati played a pivotal role in Spain’s Nations League victory in February, scoring in both the semi-final and final. She bested Zambia’s Barbra Banda and Norway’s Caroline Graham Hansen for the award.
“I’m very grateful for this award, but it’s always a team effort. With Barca winning everything and the national team’s success, this is shared with them,” Bonmati said.
Coaching Excellence Recognized
Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti won the best men’s coach award, reflecting his leadership in guiding Real Madrid to a league and Champions League double. “I share this with my players, the president, and everyone at the best club in the world,” Ancelotti remarked.
Emma Hayes received the best women’s coach award after leading Chelsea to their fifth consecutive Women’s Super League title and guiding the U.S. team to Olympic gold.
Other Honors
Alejandro Garnacho of Manchester United won the Puskas Award for his stunning goal against Everton. Brazil’s Marta claimed the inaugural Marta Award for the best goal in women’s football, named in her honor, for her strike against Jamaica in June.
The best goalkeeper awards went to Emiliano Martinez of Argentina and Aston Villa for men and Alyssa Naeher of the Chicago Red Stars for women, completing a night of celebration for football’s elite.
