Stephen Curry delivered a season-high 49 points, including the decisive free throws in the final seconds, as the Golden State Warriors edged the San Antonio Spurs 109-108 in an NBA Cup matchup on Friday. The victory completed a sweep of the two-game mini-series in San Antonio and marked Golden State’s third win in their last four games.
The Warriors improved to 1-1 in West Group C play of the league’s in-season tournament, while the Spurs also fell to 1-1.
San Antonio held a 10-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but Golden State clawed back thanks to key contributions from Curry, Gary Payton II, and Brandin Podziemski. The trio helped the Warriors take a 101-100 lead with 3:37 remaining.
Spurs star Victor Wembanyama responded with a tip-in over a defender to put San Antonio ahead 108-105 with just over a minute left. Jimmy Butler III’s layup brought Golden State within one, and after a block by Wembanyama and a missed shot by De’Aaron Fox, Curry drove the lane and was fouled with 6.4 seconds on the clock. He calmly sank both free throws, giving the Warriors a 109-108 advantage. San Antonio’s final attempt, a contested jumper by Fox at the buzzer, bounced off the rim, sealing the win.
Curry led all scorers with 49 points, while Podziemski and Will Richardson each added 10 points for Golden State. Butler finished with 21 points for the Spurs, with Wembanyama contributing 26 points and 12 rebounds. Fox added 24 points and 10 assists, while Julian Champagnie scored 14 and Stephon Castle and Devin Vassell chipped in 13 and 11, respectively.
The game started with San Antonio holding a slight 20-18 advantage after the first quarter. Golden State tied the score at 28 in the second quarter on a three-pointer from Quinten Post. The Warriors then pulled ahead through long-range shooting, with three-pointers from Curry and Podziemski and two from Richardson giving them a 40-33 lead. The Spurs closed the half on a 10-4 run to trail 47-45 at halftime.
Curry scored 18 points in the first half alone, while Fox led San Antonio with 14 points before the break. In the third quarter, Golden State went on a 14-6 run to take a 68-66 lead. Curry’s highlight-reel bank shot, completed as a three-point play after a foul, capped the surge and set the stage for a dramatic finish.
The Warriors’ victory underscored their resilience and highlighted Curry’s scoring brilliance, as the team now looks to build momentum in the in-season tournament.
