The Test careers of India captain Rohit Sharma and batting maestro Virat Kohli are under intense scrutiny following their lackluster performances in the ongoing five-match series against Australia. As India trails 2-1 in the series after a crushing defeat in Melbourne, the possibility of the iconic duo stepping away from Test cricket has become a hot topic in cricket circles.
Rohit, 37, has struggled to find form, managing just one fifty and 10 single-digit scores in his last 15 Test innings. A tactical move to shift him down the batting order has yielded little success. His captaincy is also under the scanner, with India equaling an unwanted record of five Test losses in a season, last seen during Sachin Tendulkar’s tenure as captain in 1999-2000.
Kohli, 36, though still hailed as one of the modern greats, has endured a similarly dismal run. Despite a century in the opening Test in Perth, he has managed nine single-digit scores in 17 innings this season. His well-documented vulnerability to left-arm spin and deliveries outside the off-stump has been ruthlessly exploited by opponents, particularly Australia and New Zealand.
Following India’s dramatic second-innings collapse in Melbourne, local and national media have called for a generational shift. The Hindustan Times questioned whether it was time to “take a call on seniors Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli,” a sentiment echoed widely on social media, where “happy retirement” trended after the match.
The Times of India urged an immediate transition, describing the veteran players as being “in danger of being termed as liabilities.” The Indian Express speculated whether Sydney could be the final Test for the duo, with the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) still mathematically within reach.
India’s loss in Melbourne has not only jeopardized their chances of retaining the BGT but has also effectively ruled them out of contention for the World Test Championship final for the third consecutive time.
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar suggested that another poor outing in Sydney could lead Rohit to step away from Test cricket, paving the way for new talent. “The next cycle of the World Test Championship will end in 2027. India should focus on bringing in fresh faces for the next cycle,” Gavaskar told Sports Tak.
Adding to the criticism, former all-rounder Irfan Pathan questioned Kohli’s inability to address his recurring issues with deliveries outside the off-stump, pointing out a disconnect between his famed discipline off the field and his inconsistent execution on it.
As Sydney looms, the pressure on India’s senior batting stalwarts to deliver or make way has never been greater.
