Doha—Top women’s teams from Spain, Portugal, Argentina, and Italy advanced to the semi-finals of the FIP World Padel Championships in Doha on Friday after an intense day of quarter-final matches. The competition took place at the Khalifa Tennis and Squash Complex, where standout performances, particularly in the showdown between France and Portugal, captivated spectators.
In a nail-biting match between France and Portugal, the latter emerged victorious, clinching a semi-final berth. Portuguese pairings delivered crucial wins, with Collombon and Ginier Barbier defeating Fernandes and Gaspar, followed by Ribeiro and Araujo’s triumph over Pothier and Soubrie. The decider came in an intense, two-hour, 13-minute battle, as Santos and Nogueira rallied to defeat Touly and Godallier with scores of 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Portugal will now face powerhouse Spain in the semi-finals.
Spain earned its place in the semi-finals after a commanding performance, with Claudia Fernandez and Ari Sanchez winning 6-1, 6-0 against Girdo and Bjork, while Marta Ortega and Jessica Castelló secured victory in a 6-7, 6-2, 6-1 match against Arvidsson and Navarro.
Meanwhile, Argentina displayed dominance in their quarter-final against the Netherlands, sweeping 3-0 to progress. Aranzazu Osoro and Julieta Bidahorria set the tone with a decisive 6-2, 6-0 win over De Vocht and Betz. Delfi Brea and Claudia Jensen added a point by overpowering Koek and Luttikhuis 6-0, 6-1, while Virginia Riera and Daiara Valenzuela closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Hemmes and Weterings. Argentina is set to face Italy in the semi-finals.
Italy’s women’s team advanced with a 2-0 victory over Brazil, led by Carolina Orsi and Carlotta Casali, who defeated Abbud de Barros and Cirne 6-2, 6-0. Emily Stellato and Giulia Sussarello sealed Italy’s advancement with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Schuck and Abarzua.
On the men’s side, Argentina’s Fede Chingotto and Martín Di Nenno showcased skill and chemistry as they dominated Chile’s Walker and Muños Campos 6-2, 6-1, securing the first point in Argentina’s quarter-final matchup. Reflecting on the win, Chingotto expressed enthusiasm about his partnership with Di Nenno: “Playing with Martín is a beautiful thing because we’ve known each other on the court for years, and competing together in the World Championship is something I really enjoy.”
With a suspenseful line-up announcement by Argentina’s team captains, the duo was a last-minute surprise pairing that has become a strategic asset in their quest for the title.
