Defending champions Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka overcame lengthy rain delays and determined opponents to secure quarterfinal spots at the weather-disrupted ATP-WTA Cincinnati Open on Wednesday.
World No. 1 Sinner defeated France’s Adrian Mannarino 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) in a match interrupted for nearly three hours due to afternoon showers. The Italian, competing in his first event since winning Wimbledon, extended his hard-court winning streak to 24 matches and reached his fifth quarterfinal of the season.
Sinner took the opening set and the players were on serve in the second when play was halted. During the pause, the soon-to-be 24-year-old passed the time playing cards with his team. Returning to court, he was broken while serving for the match but recovered in the tiebreak, sealing victory with his 11th and 12th aces.
“He’s a very difficult opponent, different from the other players,” Sinner said of Mannarino. “It was a struggle to close it out, but I’m happy to be in the quarterfinals.” He will next face Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, who beat France’s Benjamin Bonzi 6-4, 6-3.
On the women’s side, Sabalenka cruised past Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-1, 7-5, notching her 50th win of 2025 and advancing to her 29th career WTA 1000 quarterfinal. The top seed, who had been pushed to three sets in her previous match against Emma Raducanu, had to regroup after surrendering a second-set break before sealing victory with a decisive break in the final game.
“The key was to focus and put as much pressure as possible on her serve,” Sabalenka said. “I’m glad to win in straight sets — I didn’t want to stay for three hours.”
Elsewhere, former champion Alexander Zverev completed a rain-interrupted win over Brandon Nakashima in under two minutes, taking the final four points for a 6-4, 6-4 victory. He will meet Toronto finalist Karen Khachanov later in the day. Fifth seed Ben Shelton, fresh from his Toronto triumph, advanced with a 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 win over Roberto Bautista Agut.
Women’s third seed Iga Swiatek defeated Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-3 despite committing 33 unforced errors, while men’s seventh seed Holger Rune advanced after Frances Tiafoe retired with a lower back injury. Rune’s win marked his 100th career hard-court victory and his first over a top-20 player since April.
In another rain-affected match, Poland’s Magda Linette upset fourth seed Jessica Pegula 7-6 (7/5), 3-6, 6-3 to reach the fourth round in Cincinnati for the first time.
