The Seattle Seahawks cruised to Super Bowl LX glory Sunday, defeating the New England Patriots 29-13 as quarterback Sam Darnold capped his journey from underperforming starter to Super Bowl champion. Darnold threw for more than 200 yards and a touchdown, guiding Seattle to its second-ever Lombardi Trophy.
“It’s unbelievable. Everything that has happened in my career, but to do it with this team, I wouldn’t want it any other way,” Darnold said after the game.
The Seahawks’ victory was powered by a dominant defensive performance and kicker Jason Myers, who converted five field goals, setting a Super Bowl record. Running back Kenneth Walker added 135 rushing yards and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.
The Patriots struggled throughout, with rookie quarterback Drake Maye sacked six times and throwing two interceptions. Maye’s bid to become the youngest starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl at 23 ended in disappointment. New England’s porous offensive line was repeatedly overwhelmed, and the team could only manage two late touchdowns.
The game remained scoreless for the first three quarters, with both sides cautious. Seattle relied on Walker’s running, while the Patriots were stifled by the Seahawks’ defence. Super Bowl LX came alive in the fourth quarter with four touchdowns. Darnold connected with tight end A.J. Barner for Seattle’s first score, before Maye responded with a pass to Mack Hollins. The Seahawks then turned a Maye sack into a career-first touchdown for linebacker Uchenna Nwosu, putting the game out of reach. Rhamondre Stevenson scored a late consolation touchdown for New England.
The win marked Seattle’s redemption after its loss to the Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX in 2015. For New England, once dubbed the “Evil Empire,” the night ended in frustration as the franchise failed to secure a seventh Lombardi Trophy and its first since Tom Brady’s departure.
The game took place at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, before 75,000 fans, with an estimated 120 million watching across the United States. Seahawks supporters dominated the stadium from the opening kickoff, as Myers’ field goal on the first drive set the tone. Seattle led 9-0 at halftime thanks to two more field goals and Walker’s steady running.
Entertainment took centre stage at halftime with a performance by Bad Bunny, marking the first Super Bowl where the star sang entirely in Spanish. The vibrant show, featuring appearances from Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin, largely avoided political commentary despite Bad Bunny’s outspoken criticism of US immigration policies.
The night was a showcase of Seattle’s balanced team effort. Darnold praised his teammates, saying, “So proud of my guys. I can’t say enough great things about our defense and special teams. I know we won the Super Bowl. We could have been a little bit better on offense but I don’t care about that right now. An unbelievable feeling.”
With this win, the Seahawks affirm their place among the NFL’s elite, while Darnold’s redemption story becomes one of the sport’s most compelling narratives of the season.
