Firas Al-Buraikan struck a vital second-half equalizer as Saudi Arabia battled to a 1-1 draw with Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday, booking their place in the knockout stage of the CONCACAF Gold Cup for the first time as guest participants.
The result, played out under the lights in Las Vegas, ensured Saudi Arabia finished second in Group D with four points (1-1-1), behind hosts United States who topped the group with a perfect 3-0 record. Trinidad and Tobago, who needed a win to advance, were eliminated with just two points (0-1-2).
Trinidad took an early lead in the 10th minute when Dante Sealy unleashed a thunderous left-footed strike from distance, beating Saudi goalkeeper Nawaf Al-Aqidi to open the scoring in style. The Caribbean side kept up the pressure for much of the first half, keeping Saudi Arabia on the back foot.
However, the Green Falcons gradually gained control in the second half, pushing for an equalizer. Their persistence paid off in the 78th minute in a sequence that saw the crossbar rattled twice within seconds.
Saudi forward Saleh Al-Shehri broke through the Trinidad defense and fired a shot that smashed off the crossbar. The rebound fell kindly for Firas Al-Buraikan, who was quick to pounce and slotted the ball home past goalkeeper Marvin Phillip, who made two saves in the match.
The drama continued deep into stoppage time when Trinidad’s Justin Garcia came agonizingly close to a match-winner. In the sixth minute of injury time, Garcia found himself unmarked in the box, but his powerful effort cannoned off the crossbar, dashing Trinidad’s hopes of advancing.
Saudi Arabia held firm in the final moments to secure the draw and a spot in the quarterfinals. Goalkeeper Nawaf Al-Aqidi contributed with two key saves, helping his side survive the late surge.
The result marks a significant achievement for Saudi Arabia, who were invited to the Gold Cup as guests and have now advanced beyond the group stage. The team will look to build on this momentum as they prepare for a tough knockout clash in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Trinidad and Tobago exit the tournament with heads held high, having pushed their group rivals to the limit in every match.
