India captain Rohit Sharma has expressed confidence in Virat Kohli’s ability to overcome his struggles with deliveries outside the off-stump during the ongoing Test series in Australia. Speaking ahead of the crucial Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, Rohit lauded Kohli’s caliber and emphasized his capacity to adapt and succeed.

“Modern-day greats will figure out their own ways to deal with challenges,” Rohit told reporters on Tuesday. Kohli, who ended a prolonged slump with an unbeaten century in the first Test in Perth, has struggled with consistency, particularly against deliveries moving away from his stumps.

Rohit’s Batting and Team Dynamics

Rohit himself has faced scrutiny for his performances in the series, managing just 19 runs across three innings since rejoining the team after the birth of his son. Despite questions about his role in the batting order, the Indian captain remained tight-lipped about a potential return to the opening slot, where he has historically thrived.

“Who bats where is something we’ll figure out within the team. It’s not something I should discuss in every press conference,” Rohit said. “We’ll do whatever gives us the best chance to succeed.”

Backing Shubman Gill Amid Struggles

The skipper also offered support to young batter Shubman Gill, who has faced challenges in overseas Tests. Gill has averaged just 26.72 in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries, with no half-century in his last 13 innings.

“If he gets going, we all know he can be very dangerous,” Rohit said, noting that Gill looked promising in both innings in Adelaide but failed to convert his starts.

“Gill is one of our young prospects playing really well. These tours can be challenging, just as it is for other teams when they travel to India,” he added.

Series Tied at 1-1 Ahead of Final Two Tests

After dominating the first Test with a 295-run win, India suffered a 10-wicket defeat in Adelaide and managed to draw the rain-affected third Test in Brisbane. With the series tied 1-1, Rohit acknowledged the importance of the upcoming matches.

“Both teams have played solid cricket. These two Tests are going to be so important. We’re focusing on Melbourne and ensuring we get things right here,” he said.

Squad Update

India has added uncapped Mumbai all-rounder Tanush Kotian to the squad for the final two Tests. Meanwhile, pacer Mohammed Shami has been ruled out due to a knee injury, further testing the team’s depth.

The Boxing Day Test in Melbourne is set to be a decisive encounter as both teams aim to seize momentum in the closely contested series.
