Real Madrid added another feather to their illustrious cap, securing the Intercontinental Cup title with a 3-0 victory over Mexican club Pachuca at Lusail Stadium on Thursday night. Goals from Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Jr., and Rodrygo sealed the triumph, capping off an exceptional year for the Spanish giants.
Despite Real Madrid’s recent struggles, the result was never in doubt as they faced an underdog opponent in Pachuca. Coach Carlo Ancelotti had warned his team about the potential pitfalls of cup matches, stating, “Every game is a trap, particularly the Cup ones.”
The match started cautiously for Madrid, but they eventually asserted dominance. Mbappé opened the scoring in the first half, converting a Vinícius Jr. assist after a perfectly timed pass from Jude Bellingham. Vinícius dazzled with his footwork to evade Pachuca’s goalkeeper, setting up Mbappé for a clinical finish into an empty net.
Rodrygo extended the lead early in the second half with a stunning curling shot from the edge of the box. After a brief VAR review to assess a potential offside by Bellingham, the goal stood, much to the delight of Madrid fans. Vinícius then cemented the victory in the 84th minute, coolly converting a penalty after Lucas Vázquez was fouled in the box.
Pachuca, winners of the Concacaf Champions Cup, showed resilience despite being outclassed. Captain Salomón Rondón tested Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois with a free-kick and a close-range header, but the Belgian shot-stopper remained steadfast. Pachuca coach Guillermo Almada praised his team’s effort but acknowledged Real Madrid’s clinical edge. “We had our chances but couldn’t capitalize. Their efficiency was decisive,” he said.
For Real Madrid, the win marked their ninth global trophy, adding to their storied history in the Intercontinental Cup and FIFA Club World Cup competitions. It was also a landmark moment for coach Carlo Ancelotti, who became the most decorated manager in the club’s history with 15 titles, surpassing Miguel Muñoz.
“This victory reflects our preparation and attitude,” Ancelotti said. “It was a challenging midseason match, but we deservedly won.”
Real Madrid’s attention now turns to domestic and European competitions. They sit third in La Liga and face a precarious Champions League campaign. The team will host Sevilla on Sunday in their final game of the year before traveling to Saudi Arabia for the Spanish Super Cup in January.
This year’s Intercontinental Cup, revived in partnership with FIFA, follows the format of the original competition held from 1960 to 2004. With the expanded FIFA Club World Cup set for 2025, Real Madrid’s win sets the stage for further international clashes, including a rematch against Pachuca next year in the United States.
