Shai Gilgeous-Alexander powered the Oklahoma City Thunder to a commanding 137-106 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday, keeping their perfect record intact and making them the NBA’s only unbeaten team this season. The win improved the defending champions to 7-0, matching their red-hot start from the 2024–25 campaign.
While the Thunder surged ahead, both the San Antonio Spurs and Chicago Bulls suffered their first defeats of the season. The Spurs’ unbeaten run ended with a 130-118 loss to the Phoenix Suns, while the New York Knicks handed the Bulls a 128-116 defeat at Madison Square Garden.
Oklahoma City dominated the Pelicans despite missing three key players — Luguentz Dort (illness), Chet Holmgren (back injury), and All-Star Jalen Williams, who is still recovering from off-season wrist surgery. The Thunder shot an impressive 56 percent from the field, including 20-of-48 from three-point range, and tallied 33 assists in a well-rounded offensive display.
Gilgeous-Alexander led all scorers with 30 points, while Aaron Wiggins added 15. Cason Wallace and Isaiah Joe contributed 13 points apiece, and eight Thunder players finished in double figures.
Head coach Mark Daigneault praised his team’s composure and consistency, saying their early-season success was built on persistence rather than perfection. “We weren’t making a ton of shots early in the season, but we continued to focus on the things that generate good shots,” Daigneault said. “It’s more about the persistence we’ve shown through a rough shooting stretch than just tonight’s performance.”
In Phoenix, the Spurs’ impressive 5-0 start came to a halt as Victor Wembanyama struggled against the Suns’ tight defense. The 21-year-old French phenom, who entered the game averaging over 30 points and nearly 15 rebounds per contest, managed just nine points, nine rebounds, and four blocks. He failed to score until the final minute of the first half and did not attempt a single free throw.
Suns forward Ryan Dunn credited the team’s defensive focus. “He’s one of a kind,” Dunn said. “We made it tough on him and gave him different looks.”
Devin Booker led Phoenix with 28 points and 13 assists, while rookie Stephon Castle scored 26 for San Antonio. The Suns dominated from the outset, opening with a 31-point first quarter and never relinquishing the lead.
Meanwhile in New York, the Knicks avenged Friday’s loss to Chicago behind Jalen Brunson’s 31-point performance. OG Anunoby added 21 points, and Karl-Anthony Towns posted 20 points and 15 rebounds.
Chicago’s Josh Giddey shone in defeat, recording a triple-double with 23 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists. The Bulls’ 5-0 start — their best since 1996, the year they won their fifth NBA title with Michael Jordan — came to an end as the Knicks took control late to seal the win.
