Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has returned to the touchline after a serious bout of pneumonia sidelined him for nearly two weeks. Though not fully recovered physically, the 47-year-old says he is mentally ready to resume his duties as the Magpies push for a top-five Premier League finish and a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Howe was hospitalized on April 11 after experiencing several days of illness, missing crucial matches against Manchester United, Crystal Palace, and Aston Villa. Speaking to the press on Friday ahead of Newcastle’s home fixture against Ipswich, the manager admitted his recovery is still ongoing.
“I’m OK. I’m not 100 percent in my body, but I’d like to think I’m very close to 100 percent in my mind, which is the most important thing,” Howe said. “I certainly have been through a range of emotions, but thankfully I feel like I’m on the road to recovery.”
During Howe’s absence, assistant manager Jason Tindall stepped in and led the team to convincing victories over Manchester United and Crystal Palace. The momentum stalled, however, with a 4-1 defeat to Aston Villa last weekend.
Despite his lingering physical weakness, Howe was eager to return and contribute as the season reaches its decisive phase. “The staff behaved and acted absolutely brilliantly,” he said. “Now I’m back, I hope I can add something to the group as we go into the last five games.”
Howe, who earlier this season guided Newcastle to their first major trophy in 56 years by winning the League Cup, revealed that his condition could have worsened without swift medical intervention. “I’m one of those people who thinks, ‘I’ll be OK in a couple of days.’ But I’m very thankful to our doctor, Paul Catterson, who acted quickly. Without that, it could have had a different outcome.”
Though not yet ready to participate fully in training sessions, Howe is gradually easing back into his daily responsibilities. “It was normal service resumed, probably minus running around,” he joked. “A lot more reserved physically, and I think I’m gonna be that way for a while.”
Newcastle currently sit fifth in the Premier League standings and are fighting to secure European football for next season. With Howe back on the sidelines, the club will be hoping to maintain focus and finish the campaign strong.
