MLS Transfer Spending Hits Record $336 Million in 2025, Led by LAFC’s Son Heung-min Deal

Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs shattered their all-time transfer spending record in 2025, investing nearly $336 million in player acquisitions, the league confirmed this week. The surge, nearly double the $188 million record set in 2024, underscores the league’s growing ambition to compete on the global stage.

According to MLS, the 2025 spending spree represents a 75 percent year-on-year increase, a figure that would have ranked the American top flight eighth among the world’s biggest-spending leagues last year—surpassing Mexico’s Liga MX and Argentina’s Primera Division.

The biggest headline came from Los Angeles Football Club, which secured South Korea’s national team captain Son Heung-min from Tottenham Hotspur in a reported $26.5 million transfer. The deal not only set a new league record but also highlighted MLS’s intent to attract established international stars in their prime.

Two other major signings further pushed the league’s financial boundaries. Atlanta United spent $22 million on Ivorian striker Emmanuel Latte Lath, while FC Cincinnati invested $16.3 million to bring in Togo’s Kevin Denkey. Collectively, these transactions saw MLS’s individual transfer fee record broken three times within a single year.

Eight clubs established new internal transfer records in 2025, with Austin FC doing so twice. Nearly half of all MLS teams have completed their highest-ever signings in just the past two seasons, reflecting a broader trend of aggressive squad building.

In total, 169 players arrived from overseas this year, representing 50 different countries, with an average age of 25.2 years. Brazil, Argentina, England, and Portugal were the most tapped leagues, each supplying multiple players to the MLS market. Notably, at least eight deals across the league crossed the $10 million threshold, a rarity in MLS until recent years.

Between January 1 and February 4—a window traditionally dominated by MLS activity—the United States ranked sixth globally in transfer spending at $145 million and seventh in outgoing revenue at $125 million. Outgoing transfer fees rose 126 percent compared with the same period in 2024, with seven players leaving MLS for fees of at least $10 million. Nine clubs also set records for outgoing sales, illustrating the league’s growing role as both a buyer and seller in international football.

A major driver of this year’s activity was the introduction of the league’s new “cash-for-player” trade rule. Launched in January, the mechanism allows teams to trade directly for players without relying on General Allocation Money, draft picks, or other assets. In its inaugural season, the system accounted for more than $40 million in transactions involving 11 players.

Notable trades under the new framework included Evander’s move to FC Cincinnati, Djordje Mihailovic to Toronto FC, Jack McGlynn to Houston Dynamo, Daniel Gazdag to Columbus Crew, Luciano Acosta to FC Dallas, and Dejan Joveljic to Sporting Kansas City.

With its record-breaking spending spree and innovative trade mechanisms, MLS is signaling a new era of ambition—aiming not only to retain top domestic talent but also to position itself as a serious player in the global transfer market.
