Real Madrid are expected to welcome star forward Kylian Mbappe back into the lineup for their Club World Cup last-16 showdown against Juventus at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Tuesday. The France international, sidelined for all three group stage matches due to acute gastroenteritis, is now likely to make his debut in the tournament.
“It’s a big possibility,” confirmed Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso during Monday’s pre-match press conference. “He’s been training well and is looking sharp. We’re hopeful he can play a part.”
Mbappe’s anticipated return adds to the growing optimism within the Madrid camp, as defenders Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao have also recovered from injury. Alonso, who took over managerial duties earlier this month, welcomed the defensive reinforcements.
“Both Dani and Eder are coming back after a long recovery,” Alonso said. “It’s important for the group to feel their presence. At this decisive stage, everyone has a role to play — whether starting or supporting from the bench.”
Alonso also emphasised his vision for a unified team built on collective effort. “We want a team that works as one — 11 players fully committed in every phase of the game. That foundation will allow talents like Vinicius, Mbappe, Rodrygo, and Bellingham to express themselves.”
Juventus, who are seeking a resurgence on the global stage, are bracing for the challenge. Head coach Igor Tudor admitted the draw was a tough one but remains confident in his squad’s ability to compete.
“We’ve got a top-level team,” Tudor said. “The draw wasn’t ideal, but we accept it. We have to fight, stay disciplined, and seize our chances. I believe, and the players believe — we’re here to win.”
Tudor also praised Alonso’s early impact on Madrid’s playing style, comparing it to the dynamic football seen during Alonso’s time at Bayer Leverkusen.
“You can already see his tactical imprint. Their last match resembled Leverkusen’s approach — fluid movement, high pressing, well-structured. But like any team, they have weaknesses we hope to exploit.”
The winner of Tuesday’s match will advance to face either Borussia Dortmund or Monterrey in the quarter-finals. That match is also scheduled for Tuesday, taking place in Atlanta.
As anticipation builds, all eyes will be on whether Mbappe’s return can spark another deep run for Real Madrid in a tournament they’ve dominated in recent years.
