Jockey Szczepan Mazur enjoyed a stellar afternoon on Saturday at the Al Rayyan Racecourse, securing four wins, including guiding Al Jeryan Stud’s Aafoor to victory in the prestigious HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani Rifle. The four-year-old colt triumphed in a fiercely contested 2200m race for four-year-old+ thoroughbreds, edging out Haunted Dream by half a length.
Mazur hailed the day as “amazing” after his quartet of wins, attributing Aafoor’s success to the colt’s impressive speed and strategic positioning during the race. “Aafoor travelled very well in the final stretch. I followed the best horse, Haunted Dream, throughout the race, and it paid off in the end,” Mazur said.
Trained by M H K al-Attiyah, Aafoor’s win marked a triple triumph for the trainer and owner, Al Jeryan Stud. The feature race also saw Wathnan Racing’s Haunted Dream take second place, while last year’s winner, Simca Mille, finished third under Maxime Guyon.
The day featured a thrilling 10-race card, highlighted by Abbes clinching the HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani Trophy (Gr 3 PA) for four-year-old+ Purebred Arabians. The eight-year-old grey horse, owned by Wathnan Racing and trained by Alban de Mieulle, secured his third consecutive win in the event by a narrow margin over stablemate Raed. The victory marked a one-two finish for the trainer and owner, adding to their dominant performance with four wins on the day.
Mazur’s winning streak began with Al Jeryan Stud’s AJS Agadir in the Local Purebred Arabian Novice Cup. The five-year-old mare delivered a commanding 8½-length victory after a powerful surge in the home straight.
The jockey’s second win came aboard Al Buraq in the HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani Trophy for Local Thoroughbreds, completing another success for Al Jeryan Stud and trainer M H K al-Attiyah.
Mazur also guided Al Falah Stud’s Phoebus to an impressive victory in the HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani Trophy for three-year-old thoroughbreds. The colt, making his Qatar debut, showcased remarkable potential by surging to the front in the home straight.
Jockey James Doyle added to the day’s excitement, achieving a quick double, including a dominant win with Wathnan Racing’s Lippo De Carrere in the HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani Trophy for Purebred Arabians.
HE Sheikh Hamad bin Joaan al-Thani crowned the winners alongside QREC Chairman HE Issa bin Mohammed al-Mohannadi, marking a memorable day of racing in Qatar.
