England’s Matt Fitzpatrick claimed the DP World Tour Championship on Sunday after defeating world No. 2 Rory McIlroy in a playoff, denying the Northern Irish star a double victory on the season-ending day in Dubai.
McIlroy had already secured the Race to Dubai title for the seventh time — and the fourth consecutive season — but his hopes of adding the $10 million Tour Championship slipped away when his tee shot found the water on the first playoff hole at Jumeirah Golf Estates’ Earth course. Fitzpatrick seized the moment, securing the title with a steady par after a composed playoff approach.
Fitzpatrick posted a closing 66 to reach 18-under par for the tournament. His round was capped by a crucial birdie on the 72nd hole, setting the clubhouse target and applying pressure on the leaders. Minutes later, McIlroy produced a dramatic response of his own, striking a superb second shot to within 16 feet on the final hole and converting the eagle putt to join Fitzpatrick at the top of the leaderboard.
Despite McIlroy’s late surge, the playoff proved decisive. His misjudged tee shot opened the door for Fitzpatrick, who remained steady to claim the trophy for the third time. The Englishman previously lifted the title in 2016 and 2020, and Sunday’s win marked his 10th DP World Tour victory in 195 starts. The performance is expected to move him into the world’s top 25.
Tommy Fleetwood and Laurie Canter of England, Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg and Denmark’s Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen shared third place at 17-under par. All four delivered strong final rounds, with Fleetwood and Canter signing for 67s, Aberg producing a 66 and Neergaard-Petersen closing with a 68.
For McIlroy, the day carried historical significance. His seventh Race to Dubai crown moves him past Spanish great Seve Ballesteros and brings him within one of Colin Montgomerie’s all-time record of eight season-long titles. Despite the playoff disappointment, McIlroy reaffirmed his position as the most dominant player on the DP World Tour in recent years.
The season finale delivered a dramatic finish, with standout performances and a playoff that capped a tense closing stretch. Fitzpatrick’s victory adds another major highlight to his career, while McIlroy’s continued consistency ensures his place at the top of the European golf landscape.
