Diego Luna scored twice in the opening 15 minutes to lead the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) to a 2-1 victory over Guatemala in the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinal on Wednesday, securing a spot in Sunday’s final in Houston.
The 21-year-old Real Salt Lake midfielder continued his breakout year with a brace that stunned Guatemala early. Luna, who was overlooked for last year’s Olympic squad, has now cemented his place as a key contributor for the national team, tallying three goals and four assists in 2025—more than any other U.S. player this year.
Luna struck first in the 4th minute, reacting swiftly to a mishandled shot by Guatemalan goalkeeper Kenderson Navarro. After Luca de la Torre’s long-range effort was fumbled, Luna pounced on the rebound, controlling the ball with his right foot before smashing it home with his left.
Just 11 minutes later, he doubled the U.S. lead with a stunning strike from 22 yards out. Receiving a pass from Malik Tillman, Luna unleashed a powerful shot that left Navarro rooted as the largely pro-Guatemalan crowd at CityPark fell silent.
Guatemala, however, refused to fold. The Central American side dominated the closing stages of the first half, outshooting the U.S. 12-2 over the final 20 minutes, and pressed for a comeback throughout the second half.
American goalkeeper Matt Freese was pivotal in preserving the lead, making four crucial saves. His biggest came in second-half stoppage time, diving left to deny José Morales in what could have been the equalizer.
Guatemala finally broke through in the 80th minute when Olger Escobar danced past defenders and slotted a low shot through a crowd of players to make it 2-1. But despite a late surge, the U.S. held firm.
The semifinal clash marked the first-ever Gold Cup knockout round meeting between the two nations. It was Guatemala’s first semifinal appearance since 1996, while the U.S. now advances to its 13th Gold Cup final.
The Americans will face the winner of Thursday’s second semifinal between Mexico and Honduras, with the championship match set for Sunday in Houston. Regardless of their opponent, Luna’s stellar form and growing influence suggest he may be an indispensable piece of the U.S. squad heading into the 2026 World Cup.
