Manchester United reignited their challenge for a Champions League place after sweeping aside struggling Wolves 4–1 at Molineux on Monday night, a result that manager Ruben Amorim said reflected clear signs of progress.
United entered the match under pressure following a run of only one win in five league games, including a bruising home defeat to Everton and a tense draw with West Ham that drew boos at Old Trafford. With Wolves bottom of the table and in dismal form, Amorim’s side could not afford another setback.
Bruno Fernandes delivered when it mattered, scoring twice and leading a performance that lifted United to within a point of the top four. Bryan Mbeumo and Mason Mount added second-half goals as United pulled clear after Wolves briefly levelled before the interval.
“I really enjoyed how we played in the second half,” Amorim said after the match. “We had good pace, good quality in the decisions. We finished the game well. I think we improved a lot compared to last season and we are creating so many more chances.”
Wolves’ problems deepened as their losing streak in the league stretched to eight matches, equalling the club’s worst top-flight run since the early 1980s. Manager Rob Edwards, appointed in November, is still searching for his first win, while the team remains stuck on just two points after 15 games.
Before kick-off, hundreds of Wolves supporters staged a 15-minute boycott to protest against the club’s ownership. When they returned, they watched their team survive early pressure as Sam Johnstone denied Diogo Dalot with a low save. But the reprieve was short-lived.
United took the lead in the 25th minute with a goal that summed up Wolves’ troubled season. A mis-hit back-pass from Andre was intercepted by Matheus Cunha, who squared for Fernandes. The midfielder slipped while shooting but still managed to push the ball past Johnstone, prompting more anger from home fans.
Wolves responded just before half-time when Jean-Ricner Bellegarde stretched to turn in David Moller Wolfe’s pass, ending the team’s long goal drought stretching back to late October.
Any momentum the hosts gained vanished after the restart. A sharp United move in the 51st minute saw Mount find Dalot, whose cutback gave Mbeumo a simple finish. Mount then struck from close range 11 minutes later, meeting Fernandes’ cross with a clean volley.
Fernandes completed the scoring with an 82nd-minute penalty after Yerson Mosquera handled in the box, sealing a confident win that offered United a welcome lift after weeks of scrutiny.
Wolves now face daunting fixtures against Arsenal and Brentford as they attempt to avoid matching the Premier League’s longest winless start to a season.
