Fresh off the intensity of Melbourne, the spotlight now shifts to Dubai, where the story of this year’s Australian Open continues. Elena Rybakina, 26, who dethroned defending champion Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 on Saturday, will return on February 15 to the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, a tournament that has become increasingly significant for the Russian player.
Rybakina, who added a second Grand Slam title to her 2022 Wimbledon victory, enters Dubai as the world No. 3 and a resident of the city since 2024. She is expected to bring both her form and experience to the Emirates, where she has previously reached the final in 2020 and the semifinals last year.
“Congratulations to Elena, who we are delighted is returning to Dubai this month,” said Ramesh Cidambi, managing director of Dubai Duty Free and chairman of the organizing committee. “The participation of the entire top 20 so soon after Melbourne gives fans a chance to see the sport’s biggest names together in one place. For the players, we provide another proving ground and an immediate chance to test themselves on a hard court against the very best once again.”
Rybakina’s title run in Australia showcased her powerful serve, flat baseline shots, and remarkable composure under pressure. Salah Tahlak, tournament director and deputy managing director of Dubai Duty Free, added: “She has competed at our tournament in Dubai five times in the past six years. As a Dubai resident, she enjoys a lot of ‘home’ support here, which will only grow after this past weekend’s fantastic victory. We look forward to welcoming her back.”
All eight Australian Open quarterfinalists are confirmed to compete in Dubai, bringing the rivalries, storylines, and high-level tennis that defined the season’s first major. The field includes world No. 1 Sabalenka, six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek, world No. 4 Amanda Anisimova, American stars Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, and two-time Dubai champion Elina Svitolina. Rising talent Iva Jovic, just 18 years old, will also take part.
Other notable entrants include defending champion Mirra Andreeva, 2024 winner Jasmine Paolini, Canadian breakout Victoria Mboko, and 2019 winner Belinda Bencic. The tournament runs from February 15 to 21 and will be followed by the ATP 500 men’s competition from February 23 to 28.
With a world-class field, the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships promises thrilling matches and a continuation of the season’s compelling narratives. Fans can expect high-level performances as Rybakina and other top players aim to build on their early-season form while enjoying strong local support in the Emirates.
