An 81-year-old man using an electric wheelchair was killed on Tuesday after being struck by a car driven by Inter Milan goalkeeper Josep Martínez, Italian media reported. The fatal accident occurred near Inter’s training facility in Appiano Gentile, a small town just outside Milan.
According to initial reports, police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Early findings suggest the victim may have suffered a sudden medical emergency that caused him to veer off a designated cycle path and into the roadway, where Martínez was driving. Authorities are working to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the collision.
Following the impact, Martínez and several other motorists immediately stopped to assist the elderly man. Emergency services, including an air ambulance, arrived shortly after the incident, but despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses described the scene as distressing, with the 26-year-old Spanish goalkeeper visibly shaken but physically unharmed. Martínez, who joined Inter Milan earlier this year, remained at the location to cooperate fully with police officers conducting their investigation.
In a gesture of respect, Inter Milan canceled a scheduled press conference with youth team coach Cristian Chivu later in the day. The club has not yet released an official statement but is understood to be offering support to Martínez as he recovers from the emotional impact of the tragedy.
Local authorities are expected to release a full report once the investigation concludes, including whether road conditions or any other external factors contributed to the incident.
The tragic event has cast a somber mood over the club and its supporters. Residents of Appiano Gentile, a quiet town that frequently hosts Inter’s training sessions, expressed shock and sadness at the news.
While police continue to review evidence and interview witnesses, early indications suggest the crash was an unfortunate accident rather than the result of reckless driving.
The name of the victim has not been made public, pending notification of his family.
