The Desert Vipers continued their strong start to the DP World International League T20 season with a gripping two-wicket win over the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Friday. A composed 48 from Shimron Hetmyer and a stunning late burst from Khuzaima Tanveer carried the side over the line as they successfully chased 171 in a match that swung repeatedly across both innings.
Abu Dhabi, asked to bat first, looked well placed early on thanks to a confident opening stand between Phil Salt and Alex Hales. Hales played the anchor’s role, striking 53 from 37 balls and guiding his team to 87 at the halfway mark. But just as the Knight Riders threatened a big total, the Vipers’ spinners applied pressure and dismantled the middle order.
Qais Ahmad and Noor Ahmad delivered crucial breakthroughs, removing Hales and exposing the middle order. Their combined effort triggered a collapse that saw Abu Dhabi lose five wickets in quick succession. Andre Russell steadied the innings with an unbeaten 36, supported by Alishan Sharafu and Unmukt Chand, but the Knight Riders were restricted from fully maximising their early momentum, finishing on a competitive but chaseable total.
The Vipers signalled their intent immediately in response, hammering 19 runs off the opening over — the highest first-over score of the tournament so far. Yet, the early burst was followed by a stumble as wickets fell regularly, leaving them 44 for 3. Sam Curran and Dan Lawrence rebuilt with patience before Lawrence combined with Hetmyer for a vital 68-run partnership that revived the chase and tilted the game back toward the Vipers.
The tension rose again in the closing stages. Ajay Kumar and Russell struck key blows, with Russell dismissing Hetmyer to claim his 500th T20 wicket — a milestone that swung the match back into balance. With the Vipers still needing runs under pressure, Tanveer stepped up to seize control of the final moments. Requiring eight off the last over, he blasted a six and followed it with a boundary to complete the chase with bold hitting.
“It was, in many ways, a fortunate escape but an outstanding result for us,” Curran said after leading the team in the absence of regular captain Colin Munro. He praised the bowlers for containing a powerful Abu Dhabi lineup and credited the squad’s calmness during a tense conclusion.
Knight Riders stand-in captain Sunil Narine said his team fell short of an ideal total. “We were 15 to 20 runs short,” he noted, adding that dew made conditions difficult for his spinners later in the evening.
The victory leaves the Vipers in a strong early position in the tournament standings, while the Knight Riders will be left to reconsider their missed chances after a promising start evaporated in the middle overs.
