Detroit’s Cade Cunningham recorded a stunning triple-double to lead the Pistons to a dramatic 137-135 overtime win against the Washington Wizards on Monday night, extending Detroit’s winning streak to seven games.
The Pistons, now 9-2, edged out the struggling Wizards, who fell to 1-10 after their ninth straight loss. The game, filled with last-second heroics, saw Daniss Jenkins hit a pair of clutch three-pointers to force overtime before Javonte Green sealed the victory with a powerful dunk.
Cunningham was the star of the night, scoring a career-high 46 points on 14-of-45 shooting. He added 12 rebounds, 11 assists, five steals, and two blocks in one of the most complete performances of his young career. “He’s the one who is going to lead this team whatever we do,” teammate Jalen Duren said. “And to see him fight through and be the great player he is gave us the confidence.”
Jenkins came off the bench to contribute a career-best 24 points and eight rebounds, while Duren added 19 points and 14 boards. The performance marked Jenkins’s return after sitting out three games. “I told myself if I got that ball I was going to shoot it,” Jenkins said. “He trusted me and passed it to me and it went in. I just had to believe in myself and trust my work.”
The game’s closing minutes were electric. With 14 seconds left in regulation, Washington’s C.J. McCollum hit a floater to give the Wizards a 126-121 lead. Jenkins responded with a three-pointer, then, after a Kyshawn George free throw, nailed another from deep at the buzzer to tie the game 127-127.
In overtime, Detroit maintained momentum. Duncan Robinson hit a three-pointer to give the Pistons the lead, and Green’s dunk put them ahead 136-133 with 25 seconds remaining. Washington’s George added a layup, but Duren’s free throw created the final two-point margin. McCollum, who led the Wizards with 42 points, missed two three-point attempts in the closing moments.
Elsewhere in the NBA, the Miami Heat defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 140-138 in another overtime thriller. Norman Powell scored 33 points for Miami, while Andrew Wiggins capped the win with an alley-oop dunk at the buzzer off a Nikola Jovic pass. Cleveland’s Donovan Mitchell tallied 28 points and 15 rebounds.
In Orlando, Desmond Bane hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Magic to a 115-112 win over Portland. Paolo Banchero led Orlando with 28 points, while Shaedon Sharpe scored 31 for the Trail Blazers.
Rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama starred for San Antonio, scoring 38 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in the Spurs’ 121-117 victory over Chicago. Luka Doncic scored 38 points to lead the Lakers past Charlotte 121-111, and Giannis Antetokounmpo’s 30-point effort powered Milwaukee to a narrow 116-114 win against Dallas.
