Bayern Munich and Liverpool emerged victorious in their headline Champions League clashes on Tuesday night, as the competition delivered thrilling performances, record-breaking moments, and one of the season’s standout goals.
Bayern extended their stunning winning streak to 16 matches in all competitions with a 2-1 triumph over defending champions Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes. The German giants looked dominant in the first half and resolute in the second, surviving a tense finale after being reduced to 10 men.
Former Liverpool winger Luis Díaz starred early on, scoring in the fourth and 32nd minutes to give Bayern a 2-0 lead. His evening, however, took a turn when he was sent off in first-half stoppage time for a reckless challenge on Achraf Hakimi, who left the field injured. PSG, already weakened by an injury to Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé, pulled one back through substitute João Neves but could not break down Bayern’s defense.
At Anfield, Liverpool edged past Real Madrid 1-0 in a tense rematch of last season’s group-stage encounter. Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister scored the decisive goal in the 61st minute, heading home from a free kick after Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had made several key saves to keep his team in contention.
It was a difficult night for former Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, who returned to his old club in a Madrid shirt. He was booed relentlessly by home fans and had to endure the sight of his mural near Anfield being defaced earlier in the day.
Elsewhere, Arsenal maintained their perfect record with a 3-0 win over Slavia Prague, joining Bayern as the only teams with 12 points from four games. Bukayo Saka opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Mikel Merino struck twice in the second half. The match also saw history made when 15-year-old Max Dowman came on as a substitute, becoming the youngest player in Champions League history at 15 years and 308 days old.
The night’s most memorable moment came from Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven, who scored with an extraordinary solo run in a 4-0 victory over FC Copenhagen. The Dutchman sprinted nearly the full length of the pitch before finishing, prompting Tottenham manager Thomas Frank to remark, “It was like Lionel Messi transformed into a center back.”
In other matches, Juventus drew 1-1 with Sporting Lisbon in Luciano Spalletti’s first Champions League game as coach, while Atletico Madrid beat Union Saint-Gilloise 3-1 thanks to goals from Julian Alvarez, Conor Gallagher, and Marcos Llorente. Monaco defeated Bodo/Glimt 1-0 through Folarin Balogun’s strike, and PSV Eindhoven rescued a 1-1 draw against Olympiakos with a stoppage-time goal from American forward Ricardo Pepi.
Napoli and Eintracht Frankfurt played out a goalless draw, ending the German side’s run of high-scoring matches.
With two rounds remaining in the group stage, Bayern, Liverpool, and Arsenal have solidified their positions as leading contenders for the knockout rounds.
